Not a TV show, but a great British movie! Basically, small town saves their branchline when it is going to be abandoned. Very fun movie.
Cale,
A link to several on YouTube:

Cale, its not a TV show, it was a comedy movie made by Ealing Studios in England during the late 1950’s, on a small branch railroad. Probably my #3 favorite train movie behind “The General” and “The Train” The Premise is the branch line is about to be closed, a small group of townsfolk, determined to keep the line open, due their best to purchase the line, train themselves to operate and maintain it, and be ready for an inspection to certify that its safe. But theirs a pair of nefarious brothers who want the line shut down so they can take over the traffic with a bus service. Thats all I’ll say because its a terrific terrific movie, I wish I could send you the DVD because some of the bits are very funny, including a duel between the loco and a steam tractor, why you should always make sure the turntable is lined up, and the use of the oldest operating steam engine in Britain, the Lion. See it see it see it. If you have Netflix they stock it.
…and if you get seriously bitten by the steam loco bug, Aster make a kit for the loco as ‘Lion’. Live-steam, alcohol-fired, gauge 1 to run on 45mm track.
The model runs like ‘Hiawatha’ unless you put a good load behind it…

A grand gentleman, who used to occasionly post on LSC and MLS, worked on the production of “Titfield”…Deryck Coleman; an artist and great modeller in LS. He passed away peacefully almost a year ago this coming Christmas…he was a wonderful friend, and is very much missed.

I found it on Amazon, the description led me to believe it was a TV show, hence the first question. I stumbled over it while searching for films for the Kids Christmas. Is this a film that the entire family could enjoy? If so, and upon the praise here, I’ll go purchase!
Fred, I’m sorry to hear about your friend and our fellow hobbyist.
cale
Well, Fred, that would explain why we hadn’t heard from him over here for quite a while.
Bless.

Cale - it’s a great movie, and one that everybody of all ages can enjoy. It is very ‘gentle’ by comparsion with the stuff that is popular these days.

How right you are Terry. What is more it can be watched and not raise the blood pressure, not too exicting causing a heart attack ond can ve watched with all members of the family irrespective of age or creed.
A lot of the England portrayed in the film has gone but it can still be seen in many of the more quiter rural parts of our Country. Fashions and attitudes may change but peoples basic instincts haven’t changed much since the days of Adam and Eve I guess.
My family has no outside connection to the televised world…so DVDs are our source of entertainment, and Mom and I choose what is viewed. period.
“gentle” is what we shoot for… well if Roy Rogers is considered gentle…
I’ve ordered, should be here in a week or so…for less than $20.
can’t wait to review!
cale
Cale,
I hope you ordered for Region 1. (USA / Canada)
The ones I have found on line are PAL only.
I finally found one on E-bay for Region 1.
I’ve always liked British comedy.
John, it was: Region 1
Most interesting enjoyed it all. Paul
It just arrived late yesterday, will view this morning after breakfast…so much for laundry
I bought it from Amazon, Used in Good Condition. Looks new, not a scratch, appears to be from the Potomac Video Center in Potomac MD…I’ll be back soon!

When I lived in Ankara for a short while, polishing up my spoken and colloquial Turkish, the five of us went to the movies one evening and this was on -
Sadly for all of us, it was in Basque with Catalan sub-titles.
Grone.
