The stone viaduct

While I was running trains at the Lancastern Northwestern Railroad club (LNWRR) in Palmdale, Calif., on Sunday I snapped a picture of the 5 foot long stone viaduct we are building. One side is complete and now we are working on the backside. Each stone “brick” is individually cut and then placed in a form. It’s a time-consuming project but we are making progress.

When you’re done with that, come on over here, I have about 35 feet of loop that could use that treatment…

Seriously, though, got any more pictures of the construction? Thats VERY cool looking.

Wow is definately an understatement. Please show us more.

Nice work all

I’ll shoot some more pictures this Saturday when we have a work day in preparation for an Open House day on Apri; 30.

That is truly awesome! What are the “bricks” made of? What is the substrate?

That looks really cool. A friend of mine wants to do a viaduct on his line. He talked about lining it with brick or something.

Looks quite realistic Doug.

The “bricks” are actually shale. I cut a lot of them on my rock saws and we have another member who’s been using a tile saw. They were just carefully stacked in the form horizontally and then backed with a layer of cement. After it had set for about a week two members were able to carry it to it’s permanent location.

Sweet. Wish I had a rock saw, it would sure help with all the rock work I do on my layout.

Holy Smokes!!! That’s awesome. Individually cut blocks-amazing.
Dave

i’ve seen al ot of very good bridges cast from portland or else.
but that pic up there shows, what we all know: if you want an extraordinary result - put in an extraordiary amount of work!
