The RC&G's EBT steel boxcar

Some of you got to see the mostly complete model at York, here it is with all the fiddly bits, lettering and just a very light amount of weathering. I want it to look like it hasn’t been out of the shops for long ! Scale is 1/24.

Note to Kevin: My comments to you about the lack of grab irons on your market car were partly due to what seemed like a never ending task of applying them to this car and yes I will send you something on it for the TT.

Gary,
It sure looked good at York, and even better now with all those fiddly bits! I’m still impressed by all those rivets (talk about fiddly!).

Well done!

Superb, Gary. Now I need to get mine done. And the new boxcar project. Sigh, it never ends, does it?

Nice one Gary , nice one .
Mike

I really like that! It’d make a great prototype for a second series of boxcars for the POC. Hmmmm!

El Superbo Gary!!!

Congratulations Gary.

Well up to your usual high standards.

DAMMMIT! I’d have one built too if I had a Shop right now!!!

Nice!

Later,

K

Lookin good Gary. Did the paint ever dry?

Thanks again for displaying your model on the FEBT table at ECLSTS.

Jon

Ah yes, that paint! Did we mess it up handling it?

And, what sort of adhesive did you use???

Yes, the paint finally dried, not sure why it took so long but the paint (Scalecoat II) had been on the shelf a long time and I did thin the heck out of it when I applied it. It also could have been the humidity at the time of painting as well, although the furnace had been running so I don’t think that was an issue. I found no finger prints and only a couple edges where the paint had rubbed off. Probably what Bruce took home on his hands

The interior box was glued with and the exterior styrene applied with Weld-on #2354 from TAP plastics. It is described as “Clear, water thin, fast curing solvent for joining ABS, Cycolac, Kralastic, etc.” I can attest to the fact that it works well for plex to plex and styrene to plex. I think the only way you could separate the styrene from the plex would be to sand it off. Note: this stuff contains MEK, all safety warnings apply !

For attaching the styrene I used a 1 1/2" disposable paint brush, applied a coat to the plex, let it set a few seconds and applied a second coat then immediately placed the styrene and applied pressure to set it. You can see through the plex to tell if you missed any areas and if the edges didn’t seal you can go back with a small brush and allow the glue to flow under the joint by capilliary action. This stuff pretty much sets on contact so either be real careful aligning or cut oversize and trim to fit like you would if you were laminating formica !
