Large Scale Central

The "Original" Kittom Lumber Company. Part #2

The Climax we rode on in West Virginia, used an injector to siphon the water out of a creek. The same kind of injector used to inject water into the boiler. When the thing was filling the tank, all that I heard was the hiss of steam and running water. So there was no “pump” on that one.

Dave,

Was that at Cass? I rode the train to the top there and they syphoned water out of a tank placed, in a stream, on the way up the mountain. Great illustration of how it was done.

Doc,

I’ve got some pump pictures of the “Crab” and will get them loaded this evening. This “Crab” is a great learning tool for me as it has 3 pumps on the engine and then I’ve added a 4th pump, a hand pump, on the riding car. Lots to learn, but very enjoyable.

Bull O’Woods, the vertical boiler Class A Climax, is completed and awaiting decals and weathering. So it was back to making winter trees.

Years go I had read about making trees by securing the branch structures to the armatures using ACC glue and spraying on an “accelerator” which instantly sets the glue.I tried this technique and it worked pretty good. I used armatures and branch foliage from Super Trees. Spray paints ere used to color the branches and the trees then planted.

Small left over bits were added as low lying bushes devoid of leaves as the scene is wintertime.

Thanks for looking and following along.

Nicely done. Thanks for sharing.

Nice effects there Doc. This mini is turning into a maxi. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Sweet!

Thanks Ric, Dave and Steve. Encouragement appreciated. I have about 20 more of these “primary trees” to make for the mini. Doc Tom

Looks great Tom !(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Hello Sean,

Yes, I want out to the railroad shed and took some pictures of the half of the mini layout that is getting the winter woods treatment. Sorry for the poor lighting. When it is spring I’ll take the winter layout outside for some shots in the sunshine.

Tom

Doc, that is a beautiful scene.

Thanks Dan, Here is a little more…better lighting.

I added some custom decals and the beginnings of a firewood load to give the Class A Climax a little more character.

Next to come will be some" warm weathering" to help pop out the details on this basic black engine.

Thank you for looking.Doc Tom

I have heard of people soaking that fabric/curtain in tea to tone it down some …

The winter curtain in the door is made from aluminum foil. Don’t think it will soak …but perhaps a brown wash??

Tom

The trees look great! I’m getting ready to start “leafing” the trees on mine as well. I’ve got a bunch of sage ready for the SuperTrees ends. Just gotta muster the mojo to sit down and work on 'em. I’m in the process of finishing the grass and bushes right now. (I’ll post photos soon.)

Thanks Kevin. The Super Trees material is really some of the best out there to make trees. I think you will enjoy the process. Looking forward to more pics of your layout.

Doc Tom

I have been slowly planting trees on the mini layout.

To have a little fun I have been running trains too.

Thought I would do these B&W’s depicting the arrival in 1910 of a “modern” Stearns Heisler facing off with the “old bull” the 1890’s vertical boiler Class A Climax.

Times are a changing out in the timber. The inventiveness of the loggers is advancing the technology for harvesting the lumber
