The poor mans T19 finished

I finished the T19 bash last night and of course the light today has been rubbish. There are some differences that I did nt bother to change, such as wheel spacing and the tender usually has a single big tank, but I opted for just a few subtle changes in the interest of getting it done. That said there is a lot in this one and it took a lot longer than planned as every time I stepped back I saw some thing lacking or something I was nt happy with (the wife says I never am)! Here is a few to give you a taster. Despite being a self confessed idle type when it comes to articles, as a result of a few requests, I will be putting together a brief description of the changes and additions . I hope to get all the pics and text done in the next week or so, Thanks To Tim Brian, David Fletcher and Jack Thompson

More later… Hmmmm I dont remeber whacking that left hand lamp… and I just noticed I’ve forgotten the cab grab rail. pooo.

As usual.

NICE!!!

You can now find a brief description here at

I’ll do some pics later.

Cheers

Thanks Rod,
Very descriptive and straight forward.

A beautiful model , ten wheelers always were a balanced looking machine .

Very nice work. Great job!

Looking really good Rod. I especially like your builder’s plate.

JR

I will take three please they look great

The weather has been poor forever it seems, so no chance of doing the final pics yet. I managed to get the cab rails done and here is a shot of the back showing the fall plate and new draw-bar. The rails are a pieces of brass wire hammered flat at the end and then drilled and riveted with 00 track pins.

Curious how the flash has picked out the slight difference in the decal ink. In natural light this is virtually indescernable as can be seen in the 5th pic above. Got some holiday time due this week, so I’ll hope for some good light then.

Rod ,
If you’re bothered about the decal film show (I wouldn’t be, it’s OK on the other pics ) there are various ways of hiding it . Given your standard of modelling , you probably already know , but the Micro Decal stuff is very good , their whole range is particularly useful when dealing with matt military finishes and gloss decals .
I used their stuff to invisibly fix decals on Hartford kits . That’s matt wood with gloss VERY thin film decal . I use the softener for conforming to plank sides , followed by decalset to really snug it down , then their finishing fluid . I hesitate to use the word “varnish” , it’s called Decalcote , I think .
Anyway , if anyone has a problem with decals and their fixing , a good start can be made with Microset and family .
Nice model Rod

Thanks Mike.

Just a bit of clarification.

The tonal difference is due to the black ink being a tad darker, its not a fixing varnish thing. The decals are dry print, so they are as flat and smooth as you can get them and decal fix type stuff is unneccesary.

The cab lettering is applied as a black rectangle the size if the inset with the white lettering all in one go. This way there are no edges to the lettering, same goes for the tender which has a 35 by 140mm ish square decal applied. Again no edges to the lettering.

The loco in the pictures has had the decals fixed with Tamiya clear and them a matt varnish applied all over and the texture is constant. .

cheers

Rod ,
I see no problems with the finish you have achieved , it’s very good . It is a shame that photos don’t always show the true finish , and it does not stop there . I’ve seen excellent models look odd at shows because of the lighting . It happens with paint as well as markings .
You did mention at the start that you were waiting for a nice day to take pics . Have you forgotten where we live ? Sunny England ? Nah , just take the photos and explain , then follow up with one later when you catch that 5 minute window of sun .
Meantime , keep producing stuff to the same high standard , it’s good to see .

Very nice model, Rod.

You’re better off taking pictures on an overcast day as the light is softer and more diffuse. Bright sunlight brings harsh shadows and too much contrast. Just my opinion…

I agree Ken, I have a nice spot round the back just for that, the trouble is if this rain keeps up I’m gonna start ordering Gopher wood.

It’s also a question of timing. I finished my logging mallet ages ago and I still have nt taken the final shots of that.

Cheers

Can we have some of that rain please?

If you pay for the shipping
