The part we don't generally model

I saw this on the NGDF, and thought it rather educational. Not only for showing the kind of records that the RRs kept, but for an idea of what operations were actually like.

No other narrow gauge activity this date, Sunday

How would you like to have been that train crew stranded in the snow miles from anyplace? You’d have to shovel snow into the tender to ensure adequate water, conserve your fuel to keep the engine hot enough not to freeze… and keep trying to put all that stuff back on the rails by yourselves with a frog, jacks and basic hand tools.

Thank god for electric sidewall heaters, a chemical toilet, narrow-band radios and the ability to call out Hulcher/Winters/RJCorman with their hydraulics and sidewinder catepilars!

You didnt mention that one of the derailed cars was an explosives car. That makes it even more interesting trying to rerail it.

Jake Smith said:

You didnt mention that one of the derailed cars was an explosives car. That makes it even more interesting trying to rerail it.

Sure did:

"Memorandum reads: “Extra 486 west Roberts 12:10 PM phone east end straight track, has 13 cars main line Los Pinos, 10 empties on side track, 15 empties west switch Los Pinos, 1 partly turned over, 4 loads 18 empties stuck in snow west end straight track and 1 merchandise and 2 empty tanks derailed.”
Description of derailment indicates head end stuck in snow, helper engine shoved cars off track, which included RG 74 explosives, and 2 empty dumps, RG 752 and 735. "

Mik, I have admired your info about the early oil biz, and I’m beginning to think of you a quite the historian!

This log material does kinda’ open our eyes, doesn’t it?

In Salida extra 499 west I noticed this bit too: "…depart Marshall Pass 4:15 AM with 37 loads
Mears Jct 10 minutes cool wheels and set out
Arrive Salida 6:35 AM with 35 loads …

The bit about cool wheels caught my eye… never heard of it before now. Wheels hot from braking? When there’s snow all around? That seems a bit far-fetched to me… Does anyone here anyone know anything about this?

John, when descending the PRR Mainline from Cresson east to Altoona, a heavy 16,000+ ton coal train will be equipped with 2 4,000hp road engines and 2 3,000hp helpers on the headend while simultaneously having 4 3,000hp helpers on the rear end. Combined the train is equipped with 26,000hp of locomotives, all of which will use their electrical capabilities for dynamic braking of the train. Despite this electrical braking holding back that tonnage, the train will in addition require at least an 8lb brake pipe reduction combined with that dynamic in order to maintain a safe decent.

Because of this, the high-friction composite brake shoes will be generating heat for a continuous run of 9.5 miles at 15mph. By the time the train reaches Altoona where the helper will cut off, the wheels are easily hot enough to boil water. In fact, I personally have (when I was still a conductor) gotten off my helper unit and gone to re-hang the train’s marker (EOT/FRED) and been exposed to an intense radiant heat source, which turned out to be the wheels, sometimes as much as 10feet away, which were so hot that the wheel steel had turned blue.

Now keep in mind, the DRGW did not possess high horsepower electromotive engines equipped with extended range, computer controlled high adhesion dynamic brakes, instead relying entirely on brake shoes pressed tightly against the wheels to maintain safe train operations.

Yes, I can completely understand the need to make a stop to cool the train’s wheels. If air brakes were in fact used, I’d expect that retainers were often used as well, which would need a stop to turn down for normal running.

Well, that was very interesting, J.D. Thanks for sharing all your insights. And, yes, when I consider the numbers, the tonnage, the slope, the time involved, I guess it all does make sense after all. But I sure hadn’t thought of it before, or heard of it either. Your post much appreciated.

Mik, a littlle OT, but I can’t make the search function work. If I could, I’d stick this post onto one of your oil business threads. However, I can’t find them…

Here’s the thing: I just borrowed the Aug 2012 Model Railroader from our local public library, because there’s an article on page 28 about building an 1880’s oil refinery.

Thought you’d like to know…

I’ve noticed many similarities between these early oil stills and the more ancient turpentine stills, and between those and the even more ancient brick and tile furnaces. These structures all have a great deal in common…

It seems that the first oil industry best-selling product was kerosene, it was used as lamp oil. This refinery also produced lubricating oils and benzene. In those pre-automotive days gasoline was considered merely a volatile, explosively dangerous and unusable by-product. I didn’t know any of this, but I’m learning. One of this modeller’s tank cars is also shown.

Cheers.

Sadly both builds are still DNF

John Le Forestier said: In those pre-automotive days gasoline was considered merely a volatile, explosively dangerous and unusable by-product.

Yep, they used to bleed gasoline off into a ditch and burn it. In those days they distilled oil into it’s component parts and were stuck with the various products as the boiled off. Today they “crack” the crude using heat and pressure into carbon and hydrogen molecules and can reconfigure it into just about any petroleum product they want.

Very, Very interesting. Especially the stuck and derailed in the snow . . . makes me cold just reading about it. Thank you much for posting.

Thank You Mik, All this NG action is in my back yard, and in Hometown Farmington. It was very interesting to read about #315, the engine I work with, and Just another day of work.

I must say, those engine crews worked their tails off, often 10-11 hr days, after day. Un-like the modern unit trains, these crews did it all, and spent there shift never doing the same thing day after day. With running extras, switching, helper duty, and doubling up to the top of the pass.

I have explored much of the lines that this report covers, The big surprise is the amount of night running.

Even if no one else is interested, I’d like to read more. It would be interesting to see the difference in running opperations from 1941 to when they were running all the pipe into Farmington in the mid 50’s.

Dave, i only have what I can glom from the “Gilded Lily and Fern Bar” (Narrow Gauge Discussion Forum - for those who don’t get the reference, maybe someday I’ll explain, but it’s where “Mik” came from) There is a gentleman there posting daily dispatch reports, currently from 1941 - I can only assume that, unless he gets tired of it, he may be be doing 1942 next year.

These are the older posts I found:
