Two years ago we decided to build a new 3 track storage location in our lower area to hold locomotives and rolling stock between sessions. It’s a significant distance between this area and other storage locations so it made sense to build a new one. At the end of this new storage location is a large oak tree.
Then along came function creep. One of our operators asked in jest why don’t we go around the tree and expand into a new area. Going around the tree would not be simple but heck why not.
Our revised design added a fourth track on a grade next to the storage location and an extended tunnel totally under the path. We had enough track to extend this new section a short way to a small run around and a couple of industries.
This spring we were offered a great deal on a large quantity of additional stainless steel track which of course resulted in additional function creep.
Now the extension will go all the way back to a berm near the rear of our property. Three tunnels (one of which is the one around the oak tree), 3 wood trestles, one stone arch culvert, another stone arch bridge, a passing siding and a switch back that includes a run around to allow the train to enter the new town with a yard and industries.
