The "new" RailPro module

I used the last of my “older” RP units and need a couple more.
I got a couple from RDL.
I went to set up and program one this morning (a light steam) for an old LGB Mogul.
Everything worked fine.
Now I go into tools for this module and there is no program to set the chuffs to magnet sensors. The new directions that come with the decoder shows all the wires for the reed switch. I go into settings and can’t find the change setting.
The same thing on the other “new” one as well.
Has anyone figured this out yet?

Make sure your HC has been updated to the latest version. 99% sure that will be your issue.

If you don’t know how to do that me PM me for my phone number. You will need a Windows PC to update the HC.

Thanks Jon. I run a Mac, but have Dell laptop around here somewhere. I’ll get it charged up and report back to you.

If you haven’t already done so on the Dell, download RailPro Assistant from Ring’s website. That is the tool used to update the HC along with the USB cable from your RailPro charger.

Working on it now. I Had to charge the HC as well.
Thanks much!

OK, Jon, I updated my HC and it seems to work as it should.
On the last two “new” decoders the picture below doesn’t show up under tools.
I tested the update on the older decoder and the picture shows up.
Perhaps Robbie didn’t program my two new decoders correctly or…???

I don’t think that is a programmable feature.

It would not show up if a diesel sound, or perhaps just the picture on the sound button isn’t a steam engine profile.

Unfortunately, all of my locos are packed up or I would check the page on my HC.

I’m pretty sure it’s the picture associated with the sound. See Page 19 of the HC users manual. The sound must have this picture image

Yes I Have that picture on the “new” decoder. All of those work fine. (Bell, coal, steam, etc._

John,
Try disabling the compressor sounds so the rest can talk to each other without yelling.

Something is weird then. I’d give Robbie a call.

I didn’t respond to your post on the RPUG since I had nothing to add that wasn’t said here. Have you called Robbie, or Ring?

Could you post a picture of the sound buttons on the new module?

Jon, They are the exact icons as the older versions.
Last year, Robbie sent me a heavy steam decoder, but it had diesel horns instead of a deep whistle.
I contacted him and he simply said with his reply, “go into the program and change it” That was all he said.
The reason I buy mine from Robbie pre programmed is I don’t know how to.
I’ve purchased prolly 20 decoders from him over the years, plus some Airwire equipment.
I’m a little gunshy to ask him about these two new ones.
Even the tutorials on the group site are a little vague in some steps.
I’m eighty freakin years old and caring full time for my wife who is in stage 5 dementia and don’t have time to get a Masters Degree in computer programming.
Shut up Rooster!!! :grinning: :grinning:

OK. It’s just that some of the pictures of steam engines are very similar. Ring uses the picture selected for the sound to determine the features available.

Lets go back to basics. These are LM-5SG modules? If not, what model number?

This is the new model: LM-5S-G (Sorry for the blurred image) I copied it from RP. Mine are buttoned up in tenders.)

All of my others are LM-4S-G

The 5S is shipped with a 6 wired connector that fits in that white area on the decoder. These are the 5 volt outputs for the magnets, lights, etc.

The old 4S simply has screw connectors for those.

5S wiring diagram:

Thanks John. I’ve had no experience with the 5S-G. I have one, but it’s never been out of the box and hooked up.

Try going through all of the buttons and be sure none of them are programmed to use Output 11 as that will disable the input capability per the note on that diagram.

Could you humor me and take a pic of the page that has the Steam Sound button? I know you said it’s correct, and I don’t think you would say that if it wasn’t.

I can’t see two modules being defective, so it must be something simple that we are missing.

Also, which version of the Hand Controller do you have? Can you take a picture of the setup page (Adjust Settings button from Main page) ?

I also noted that in the RailPro Assistant there is a software update of the LM-5S-G. I was cautioned by Tim Ring to never install an older version from RPA since modules often ship with a newer version than what is on RPA. RPA has Version 1.01 for the 5S-G.

Output 9-12 aren’t used in my install. I keep it simple by using a new LED 15V bulb in my headlights and it is tied into the motor leads so it only operates going forward. (All my batteries are 14.4 V)
I have the early “2” HC so I noticed RP has an update for that, so I’ll install it later today. I mistakenly updated my HC to the new “3” series.
I’ll play around with the PC Laptop a little and maybe I can learn something about RP.
My Dell 3 year old PC laptop runs at a snails pace compared to my Mac Studio. I’m not used to sitting around watching the PC load updates for so long. Yes I’m spoiled and have no patience.
Shut up Rooster!

I’ll get your screen shots later today.

Well I was gonna ask how you wired your ditch lites but I guess this isn’t the right time.

Sounds good John. But just because you don’t connect anything to the output doesn’t mean that there isn’t a button assigned to it. That’s all it would take!

Oops on the software for an HC 3 :frowning_face_with_open_mouth: Hopefully you were able to load the software for the 2 back in.
