Large Scale Central

The most profound statement of the year

Over on MLS in the Gauge 1? thread this hits the nail on the head

What are we yelling about ? Here in the US we always create our own set of 'World Standards' anyway. And we still don't have a central standard for time (4 time zones) - yet. The rest of the world does. We use the Foot, Pound, Sec measures - almost everyone else has dropped it.

In the land of the Free, how can anything be Mandatoreeee ?

AMEN!

What the heck do timezones have to do with standards?

Apparently it’s the outgrowth of a scale/gauge discussion.

We got English… taint that a world standard…in bidness. Pretty sure it’s what you need to land an airliner in just about any major hub in the world. I know I used it back in the 70s when I was flying spam cans in Germany into the wee strips over there.

Exsqueeze me, but standard time started here in the good old US of A, to keep the trains from running into each other because the folks over in Jerkwater used a different time than the folks in Podunk. Their local appearant noons were 10 minutes different, don’tcha know.

So we have 4 different time zones. It’s a big country. Actually, we have a lot more than that, counting Puerto Rico, Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, and so on. Canada is the one with only 4 time zones. :stuck_out_tongue:

So we use ft, lbs and sec. We could use whole ball, straight through and once around. Or furlongs per fortnight. that would really confuse things.

Most profound statement of the year?

Pertinent to husbands: NEVER call home from Costco!

I vote for Wendell!

Hey I’ll give up Foot, pounds, and Sec when the IDOTS in DC buy me a New Chain 100 M, a 30 M, and a 10 M Chain; Provide a new scale (to weight with) and, what the H___, a new Gun, a Robot Unit with all the bells and whistles! Lets face it they have given away the farm why not a little to the working people!

Paul

PLEASE HOLD!

O.K. - ya got me - what are Sec measures? And, I thought time zones were universally adopted - we don’t want the sun rising at midnight, now do we?

Steve it was actually a Scottish born Canadian Engineer That came up with the idea of time zones. Sanford Fleming.
OBTW Canada has 4 1/2 time zones…don’t forget Newfoundland.

Leave up to the displaced person to cross-post and rile everybody up AGAIN! They need to go play with their new plastic money up there! LMAO!

When I switched to my Win7 'puter I forgot to transfer my TongueInCheek smilie and then I forget to get the damn thing from the 'puter at the office, but I’ll remember tomorrow.  It is a necessity to get the point across to some people.

Newfie time, Atlantic, Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific time.

Yep forgot that HJ…was a long night at work plowing snow.
Could not figure out what Mike was talking about, was just yanking Steve’s chain and he knows how to take it.
Guess I am somehow displaced now. However I think I am at home now and in my own place.

Not to worry Randy, most likely I’m the “displaced person” since I’m a Canadian by choice.  @ Mike I found the TiC smilie
