Large Scale Central

The more things change, the more they stay the same

Things are more like they are today than they ever have been before. Dwight D Eisenhower.

The NMRA are this month reporting BNSF’s decision to license its intellectual property rights to the tune of $1K up front plus 5% of all sales revenues for the use of their trademarks, including fallen flags such as Santa Fe, Burlington Northern, Frisco, Northern Pacific, Great Northern, CB&Q, SP&S, and others.

Good Lord! Don’t these fools ever learn?

Steve,

They were asleep when UP was being taken to task over there licensing rights… Louis Polk said that the Santa Fe loco’s are the biggest sellers, so why would you jack with success… Hope the same happens to BNSF…

Just order undecs and do your thing.

This is a great reason to freelance.

Reference to the railroad corporate tweekies charging model RR companys to use their logo:

Oh-my-gosh, someone thinks the large scale market is an active one.
The railroads either know what we don’t know or don’t know what we do know.
To charge for the logo means they THINK the increased charge will not deter the sales they think they are already getting.
I wonder what sales figures they are working with – especially Santa Fe.

Amen brother... it seems that in the rush to squeeze a few cents from hobbyists, these folks wind up spending much more on damage control at a later date. I can see protecting your trademark, but charging for its use on a model is silly. How much good will did the borg loose when parents stopped buying little Johnny 'Uther Pacific' equipment...maybe there is a famous quote about not reading your history lessons, in that mess someplace.
