Nice. Can’t say that I’ve ever seen an outside braced caboose before. Was playing around with some .020 Aluminum scrap in our small metal brake today making Z bends. That material is too big to model with, but was pondering what I might use it for. No Cazebo’s in my future.
Nice find Mark.
I look forward to seeing that project.
I am gathering up the pieces I will need now…Seems I exhausted most of my styrene building the outside braced box cars. Also finding nice 1:20.3 caboose trucks is not as easy as I had hoped.
I am debating what color to paint it too…I am actually tempted to go with the charteuse as pictured!!!
Mark, I am going to follow along on your build. I need a caboose and this one has caught my eye. And you are right, where to find trucks.
Mark,
Any idea where the photo was taken and what RR they came from?
Ralph
Lots of the war emergency rolling stock had no outside sheathing. Rock Island had several like that.

Ralph, the original link said they were somewhere in Texas but no idea what RR they originated from. I found several outside brased cabooses from the Katy but these held the most interest for me. I won’t be doing a “scale” copy but I will keep the original “flavor”.
Randy, Seems Accucraft has two styles of caboose trucks available seperately. Hartford also carries one. Not cheap of course. As I have a couple of AMS cabooses I can at least see the trucks ahead of placing the order. I will probably order a set from Accucraft.
Western Pacific had a number of outside braced cabooses some with cupolas and some with bay windows. Their proportions were similar to those pictured although I’m pretty sure they aren’t WP. Anyway you might find a style you like by looking up WP especially if one with a bay window should intrigue you.
