Large Scale Central

The " I didn't know that, yet" department

Hi all,

One learns something new every day!

We are getting the roof redone and the material was delivered Thursday.
Big boom truck parked in the driveway, depositing the whole shebang of fiberglass shingles right on the roof when I got home from the walk with the dogs (the “Watch out where the Huskies go, and don’t you dare feed them TROLLS!” contingent)

Too bad I didn’t check my workshop right away! One of those loads got set down on the garage roof none too gently, enough bounce to send the work light over the milling machine for a loop. Well, we all know what a proper mess shattering fluorescent tubes can make.

So what’s the “I didn’t know…” part? Didn’t realize they make things that easy, delivery smack to where you need the stuff!

Yes , and if you have ever used a wheelbarrow to move concrete a distance …NOW , they have these trucks here with the unfolding and further unfolding pipes , that shoot the concrete 40 or 50 foot or further even , to where ever you want it , THATS handy !
Oh yes the gravel/rock trucks that do the same thing also …AFTER , I did tons by hand and bucket , NOW , anywhere you want it , shoot it there !

They also have these 4 wheel motoried wheelbarrow contraptions at the rental center. Has a dumper on it ,sure could of used that in the past to get to the backyard.

Dennis, Bryan,

Those I’m acquainted with, but so far I’ve always seen the guys heading up the ladder with the shingles, one or two bundles at a time.

Probably need to hang out on a subdivision construction site to get the latest method update.

And over here they have a big vacuum truck called a “honey dipper” that comes round and sucks the crap up. We could use one here on LSC 'cause there sure is a boat load of crap being posted lately.

Easy Cob, I’m sure he meant Ship Load. :D:D

Steve

Depends. Is he using a Sub Contractor?

What did I learn today??

Well, I was modifying a set of oars and in the process discovered that brass meeting up with stainless steel will produce some really nice galvanic action. Even without electricity! The oars are fibreglass/carbon and the screws/nuts in question are part of a plastic clamp.

And yet, these items were corroded as solid as can be! Wouldn’t have expected that!

While working for the local telephone company for 36 years I’ve had occasion to work in many a development. Pre-fab trusses, pre-fab walls, everything marked with numbers so it’s like a giant puzzle being put together. Pre-fab concrete basement walls. Plastic rocks on the front of houses, concrete pumpers, shingles being delivered to the roof by escalator, boom trucks bringing in plywood and sheet-rock…now they even spray on the grass seed with some kind of green mixture.

And all the while you hear the steady thump-thumb of the air powered nailer…
