Large Scale Central

The Hudson Valley, New York

I’ve been absent for a bit but I am back now for more fun and games. We are attending the annual Seabee reunion, not far from West Point, in September. SWMBO would like to stop somewhere along the way home. Home is near Philly. I thought of tourist railroads and was given the nod ! So would anyone know what is along the Hudson as far as railroad history or tourist railroads, etc.

Dan,

How about the walkway over the Hudson. It looks like a great place to visit.

I have occasion to take Amtrak to Poughkeepsie once or twice a year. That bridge is pretty high, so your view is really impressive. It’s a good example of what a city on the decline can do, creating a positive from a negative (the bridge was about to be torn down ten years ago). Poughkeepsie Amtrak station is a busy place, due to the downstate commuters traveling to NYC, and the bridge is in view (as in “walking distance”) of the Walkway over the Hudson. I’ll bet Fall is its most popular time, when the leaves get flaming.

Similar revival in Buffalo. You should see their waterfront these days. Lots of restaurants, activities there as well. Coach fare between the two cities is $50-70, depending on which train and what discount.

I am not an employee of any Tourism group, although I probably could be. FYI - Syracuse Amtrak station is right next to a huge mall and their International League baseball park. Just sayin’.

The Catskill Mt RR is in Kingston, NY bit north of Poughkeepsie. Also a maritime museum and a trolley museum

Not only that, but during the “Great New York State Fair” (August 23 - September 4), Amtrak sets up a temporary station right across from the fairgrounds. Makes a great day trip. -Kevin.

That looks like it’s close enough to Fishkill to take a walk on. Thanks Paul

Looks good, Jerry.

Do some research on the Castkill Mountain RR before you go. They have had some zoning problems and lost some of their operating trackage.

Walkway over the Hudson is fantastic. We went this past spring. Only made it to the half-way point as the two new puppies in tow were getting tired, but had a great time. There is a nice restaurant on the water front with outdoor seating close by.
