Large Scale Central

The House(s), scenery and trains that Jack built with John's $$$

Prepared to be amazed. And get depressed. Here’s the link to one awesome layout.

It’s a shame the layout isn’t public.

I think Jack Verducci had an article abut this layout in Garden Railways a few years back. That area he models (Cranberry Lake) I just passed their the other day and is not far from me. The lake and area is part of Allamuchy Mt State Parkan area I work at from time to time. The railroad is now a rail trail.
He has a web site with videos but I cant find it.

I wonder if he’s into Operations…maybe Jack will talk him into it…

Sounds like no. A 10 Minute computer operated show depicting 1 day. To me that seems like quite a waste of effort and money for a 10 minute scene to be repeated over and over. I’d get tired of it in a week and start ripping things up!

We’ll just have to load the JMRI software into that computer…

Ralph noted the layout was not public.
Is there a threat to the layout’s existence?
Any chance of a “charity” fund raiser so the layout could be publicly seen?
Has Model Railroader any history of attempting to create a photo story (say a video?)?
Anyone with further insight?
No question as to the detail. Who knows who created it?

I guess I’ll have to play Mister “Know It All” again, since some of you have questions.

OK: John Scully’s layout was “created” by Jack Verducci, who is a professional indoor and outdoor layout and model structure builder. Translated, he gets paid to do it and this is all he does since he sold his truck body company some years ago and went in large scale model railroading. Jack has built dozens of outdoor layouts mostly in the Bay Area, where he lives and has a sensational outdoor setup of his own, which has been in Garden Railways and other publications. He has a book about building model structures and it’s worth the $20, because it’s full of great info, including some shots of Scully’s Hoboken terminal. In this case, Jack built dozens of structures and Scully’s railroad, which is in New Jersey, so Verducci racked up thousands of frequent flyer miles jetting back and forth between San Fran and Joisey, since the project took, I dunno, a year or more?

If you go to the video mentioned above and click on all the slide shows, read all the propaganda and watch the videos, you’ll learn that in addition to Jack, Kermit Paul, another Bay Area resident and an HO modeler, who is a master at lighting and animation, also worked on Scully’s layout.

The reason for its existence is a bit unusual: because it so accurately replicates life in the Northeast between the early 1950s to 1970 or so, Scully says, in his information section, which is under the “Contact Us” window, filmakers can use it in movies that are set in that era. He appparently has said that using his layout is better and cheaper than relying on computer graphics, but I’d like to know what the folks at Pixar have to say about that.

Anyway, it looks like there’ll no public tours, no fundraisers, no neighborhood operating sessions with guys like us. At least for now.

Everybody clear on this?
