The Eureka, Status

Hi Guys,

Over on MLS there is a thread about the Eureka’s last ride into history. Anyone here know whats going on with the engine?? It needed a boiler inspection to keep on running. Can someone give an update please?

Thanks, Chuck

I know that when it ran last on the D&S for railfest Dan had gotten an extension on the 1475 to be able to run. It runs on a (I believe ) a 125 lb. boiler, Pretty low for loco boilers. And on top of that it is probably the best maintained loco in the US.

Dan told me at the D&S railfest that it was going back to his house in Las Vegas, thats been more then a year ago, and I haven’t heard of its fate since then.

And as a side note it is without a doubt the best looking engine on the rails, iconic as it gets, classic american 4-4-0.

For many small railroads and individual owned locos, the 1475 is the kiss of death. The amount of work required just to do the inspection, even if no repairs are needed, can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The tourist RR business is safer for it, but fewer steam engines run as a result of the regulation.

She’s at the Nevada State RR museum.

She does a short back and forth demo on weekends.
