The Ecclectic Pleasure Loop

Hi all, How many times have we read: “Just put down some track and run something, anything!!!” Well, as one who likes to plan “things” just to make sure, I have finally seen “The Light” and followed that precious advice. I couldn’t quite see our “Eclectic Pleasure Loop” being just an elementary R1 circle, so something slightly more “elaborate” had to be “designed”. Actually the design closely follows what our distributor had in stock at the time. Since they stock Aristo that’s what it is and handy it is, too. The curved end pieces are connected with the screws, as well as the 4 1ft pieces for each of the longer straight tracks Four subassemblies to connect and one is in “business”.

Of course I had to get some AWG14 cable to hook up the powerpack, wouldn’t want any voltage drop on a “large loop” like that.   The connections to the track are quite solid.

I also had “an older high-tech powerpack” kicking around. It was a real “Bargain” (that’s what it said on the bin! And I believe whatever it says. ) It even has Voltage selection from N to G scale, unfortunately the pot for the feature had bit the dust (only the one leg) so I reversed the connection to use the other half - I wasn’t going to invest big money for a pot! And of she goes!

BTW when I mentioned that “I saw The Light”, I wasn’t kidding. Only one of the headlights is working, but it will get fixed, one day. The Eclectic train on the Eclectic Pleasure Loop consists of a Eurovapor U that should run on 750mm track on the Waldenburger Bahn, a Barmer Mountain coach (German Meter gauge), a Appenzeller box car (Swiss Meter gauge) and a MOB boxcar (Swiss Meter gauge). Of course every piece of rolling stock would have a different coupler system on the prototype and the brake system wouldn’t match either. But hey, this is Eclectic and anything goes!!     BTW if you think the pictures are a bit blurry, don’t worry! You get that puppy up to speed , adjust the camera to the “proper setting” and it will really “fly”.

Congradulations HJ , you are running trains outside , nice start , and frost heave will not be a problem on the stone , are the big blocks in the pics going to be hills or senic blocks ?

Trains R fun

Well Dennis,

It is a well planned project.  I’ve been running trains outside for quite some time, but they haven’t been running very far.
Neither does the “EPL”, but since I’m in good company by running in a “glorified circle”, I thought now is the time to let the “Critics of HJ’s approach” and the “Advocates of anything will do, just run!” know that I’ve seen “The Light”.

Oh, those blocks?? They are samples for the 1:1 retaining walls that need to be fitted in several places and will also be used for border treatment in other places. My equal half vetoed the railway tie or landscaping ties approach, she doesn’t like the look and thinks the kreosote would interfer with growing edible things. Soooooooo, stone it is!

BTW as Buffington would put it “Stay tuned”, the summer isn’t done yet and there’s another installment to this tale.

Looks great to me!

I hope you are going to leave it down throughout winter and show us all how to make track power work in ice and snow.
After all. EPL very proudly claimed their stuff worked at the North Pole.

Tony, If I do that I need a sponsor.

Just kidding!!!  Anyway, EPL/LGBoA would probably issue an all-points directive not to sell any LGB to me. And how could I then write reviews???

HJ

I had a Garden Railway at Bethel, Alaska (near the Bering Strait) and it was outside two full Winters with several meters of snow and minus 100F Wind Chills. And it worked well every Spring. The Leitpaste in the rail joints does help Greatly.

Marvin, There’s a slight misunderstanding. I’m not looking for a sponsor! As far as the large garden railway goes, well it depends what you call large… but I think mine will be large enough for my purposes. Since I always choose the “ecclectic route” aka mix and match or the way I put it “buy the most reasonable that will do the job perfectly”, getting a sponsor would be a “job”. You know how most of the companies like to have the “exclusive”? In my book not one of them is that exclusive to get the “exclusive”. You should know that by now.

I seriously doubt that EPL/LGB gives as much thought to you as you do them!
You seem quite obsessed with them.
I’m not quite sure whats ecclectic about a loop of Aristo track.

Well JJ,

Never mind about EPL or LGBoA.  And forget about obsession, life’s too short!

If you read my post carefully you’ll get the point, but trust me, I won’t worry even if you don’t!

Don’t give it a second thought! ;);););)

Ecclectic…Chinese trains that run on ecclectricity.

Just don’t mix DC eccelctics with AC ecclectics! Also make sure the scale is suitable for “G”.

A good forum does wonders for your vokablury!

Otherwise: Congratulations on getting up & running!

Yes, all too well. Once you get past the hype, All that glitters is not gold.

Hi Richard,

As a “true G aficionado” I wouldn’t have it any different way. (greetings from the “G - wie Gummi” guy)

Oh BTW, the translation of my “G - wie Gummi?” feuilleton (G - like rubber?) can be found in this PDF http://www.easternmountainmodels.com/pdf/6_03.pdf

Happy reading!

Thanks Hans. Interesting reading. I see you’re “causing waves” in europe too eh? hehe!

Richard,

I refer to it as “multi-lingual counterspin”  Gives a certain mfg a chance to give more of these pamphlets to the target audience
