The commercial dashbord cameras

Anyone use one and brave enough to show some clips? I’m especially interested to see how the picture behaves on rough/bumpy roads.

Hans, I still need to get a micro SD card for mine. Why it didn’t come with one… :stuck_out_tongue:

David,

No hurry, I’m just curious.

Hans , I can only say that when we go x-country , my head wobbles so much I’m not really looking at what the camera does .

However , on the occasional playback , the picture jiggles about rather in the same fashion as my head does .

That is a lower-end-of-the-market witness camera for recordings in case of accident . So we don’t look at the pics too often .

I hope that helps .

The image-stabilised camera we use doesn’t do that , it seems to do what it says on the box .

Mike

I have a Replay XD that I use racing. Its in a roll bar mount over my left shoulder. Here’s a slice of video. No wobble or video artifacts.

Thanks Bob, looks and sounds good.

Hans are you looking for a GoPro camera? I have a hero plus 3 black and it is really cool and capable of much more than I use it for. They just came out with the Hero4 so maybe you could pick up a 3 somewhat cheaper. I have used it to make train videos and others. I tried it on my bicycle mounted to the handlebars and to helmet. My neck was a better shock absorber than the rigid mount on the handlebars but both videos were acceptable.

Todd,

No, not really. I’m just looking for some video clips to see how the other cams stack up. Speaking of the GoPro, one of the stores is flogging the early one for Can$ 150

HJ… I have the GoPro Hero plus 3 Black and it really works great with iPhone and Wifi…

One of the issues with GoPro cameras in racing in the past is the mount is terrible for high-G loading. People have lost MANY of them on-track. They have also been susceptible to vibration-induced shutdown, and “waving” of the video. Probably not an issue for over-the-road use, but you might want to search YouTube or Vimeo for racing videos if you’re looking for rough-road use.

Yeah, watched some on both. IMHO my rig will do just fine.

And this is the MkIV rig

The tripod head is an ancient inheritance - used it just once for shooting video and the first good gust of wind tipped the flimsy alu-legged contraption - mounted on a sturdy piece of PVC with a bit of HD Velcro as shock-dampener and four screws to hold it to the dashboard.

MkIV is the “if you don’t succeed at first, try again” model.

Not sure if these are the models of GoPro and Replay XD mentioned earlier, but there is an interesting YouTube comparison mounted on various places on a car.

Camera Comparison - ReplayXD 1080 v GoPro Hero 1080

found the link from this google searchs

I’ve been seeing too many scary things while driving recently and want to get something for the dash or where ever. Maybe I’ll get lucky and catch a streaking meteorite like the car in Russia got!

Hi

I opted for the economy model from china

works good for what I use it for, crash cam, hope i never need it

Fifty bucks on EBAY video is 1280x720 and only 2inchesx3.25 inches -

doesn’t block my view of the road

very steady videos even on rough roads.

Don,

Very nice “side by side”. As the user wrote, the GoPro isn’t mounted as solidly as the Replay.

There have been occasions when I mounted the FS 100 to the side window - even down a gravel road or two - but having it on the dash is more convenient. Pan, zoom and realign as I go; I just have to clean the windshield more often.

Hans, my boss would have my head if I did that ti the company van. I too want a “crash cam” so when the inevitable happens I have a witness to what really happened. That reminds me, I really do need to get a micro SD card for the thing so I can start using it. I never know when the crash will come.

Hans,

I owned a Blackvue 500GW when I was overseas. It was purchased for liability protection. HD with a 24 hr continuous loop recording. It had WIFI with your smart phone for instant downloading. It also flags recorded segments for possible crash sequences based on detecting a jarring motion.

It is a pretty stable platform. I never took it “off road” per se but it survived a diesel minivan in Korean traffic for a year and a half. The price of the 500 has dropped considerably and I think they have newer 600’s out.

I’ll see if I can upload a clip. I doubt if I can.

Well, after watching the videos and the different rigging of the cams, I’ll stick with what I have. BTW rather than being a “crash cam” it is a sightseeing cam. There’s more pleasure in that and, as mentioned, having that “Pan, zoom, re-align” practically on the fly is a nice feature.

But speaking of dash cams; the RCMP has them in their cars, one year when I set up my gear in Revelstoke to shoot the Holiday Train, the cop rolls by heading for the Trans Canada. Me to myself: “He’ll be back in 4”

Sure enough he must have done a U up at the TCH and came rolling by, kept going back to the next intersection and … came back. “So what are you filming?”

“Waiting for the Holiday Train.”

“Is it OK if I set up behind you? the girls at the office can’t get away and they’d like to see it.”

Hmmmmm how about that, eh!
