The Burke - Devon's 2023 Mik

Dave had to go and remind us that we have two weekends left. I only have about 2 billion strips to glue on and then I can start in on the half a million shingles.

Whose stupid idea was it to do lap siding and split cedar shakes. Board and button and siding and corrugated roofing would have been way faster

Well board and button siding would have been a unique look

You havent seen button siding. . .

Got one side done.

Now that you have perfected lap siding, why don’t you hop on the big bird and come practice a little more on this school of mine

It really looks good, Devon.

Well lots more slicing and dicing to do. I ran out of strips half way up wall two.

You own one of these balsa wood cutters? Work pretty good for thicker widths strips like I’m doing. Probably could print one. I think I’ve seen files online for one before.

I normally just use a paper cutter

I might have to look into that. I have been frustrated trying to cut “strips” from the .125. The method i came up with for the thin stuff you procured for me is working fine. But that thick stuff is another beast. Table saw was a total fail.

I would agree for the thinner stuff. I thought about that and have one at work I might try. But I am not sure how well it would handle .125 thick.

I want to throw this out there for anyone looking to do something similar. I am pleasantly surprised at how well my sloppy imperfect work looks. I started out with a Guage to try and make the relief of each lap joint perfect. It was an epic fail. Then I just said “screw it” and eye balled the joints.

As has already been discussed the rude and crude method looks better to my eye. It adds “age”. It looks like things warped, split, moved, and separated which IS what happens.

I am actually very pleased with the inconsistencies. And when painted I think it will look even better.

On an additional note, I learned something new which is always good. But you can “erase” mistakes and imperfections like finger prints in styrene soaked in MEK by applying more MEK with a brush by kinda scrubbing it.

Oh and you all are invited. Next weekend I am having a party. I will provide adult beverages (and even kid beverages if the Mueller clan wants to fly in). Next weekend we are having a shingle gluing party.

I’ve never cut thin strips from the .125" stuff with the full sized saw. With the small saw it’s fairly easy.

A paper cutter would work too for the thin stuff if you can set up some sort of fence.

Is that thin stuff .020"? I’ve got plenty more if you run out. Now I wish I would have cleaned more of my great Uncle’s plastic out when we cleaned his hanger/plastic fabrics business/shop a few years back. He had some thicker sheets of textured stuff that I now regret not grabbing (and more of that thin stuff, I think I grabbed a half dozen sheets and that was only a small dent). Hind site is 20 20. And shoot, if I had known you earlier we would have known your Dad only lived a little bit away.

Sorry, but I didn’t have a clean pair of socks to wear on the airplane!

I think so but can’t swear to it. Its pretty thin.

As Dave seems to keep wanting to rub it in that we are running out of time, I have to come back to “whose dumb idea was it to do a building with lap siding and split cedar shakes”. I am going to make a serious push this weekend to make the deadline.

Don’t feel bad, Devon, you are certainly not alone. You are much further along than I am. There is no way I will come close to finishing, but I’ll keep plugging along and get what I can done. It is what it is at this point.

You both are a lot further than I’d be. Great work Devon and soldier on!

Cliff

ps if i’d started on an entry, it would be awful at this point, so i’d be seriously considering a short cut: a little gas and match action, and relabeling it a trackside cinder incident, haha! thankfully you guys are all well on your way though, and i’m looking fwd to seeing your final work!!

I think that idea/excuse was used a few years back :innocent: :sunglasses:
