Nice facility Ralph - complete with sand towers. I’m sure my local short line wishes they had it so good. They operate their shops out of a small metal building. Most maintenance is done outside and I think they load sand by hand.
We have a small short line nearby, The Thermal Belt.
They operate one day a week on a small stretch of track with one small switcher.
If they have to run a second day, it is because a breakdown or derailment the first day.

I like the weathered look of the blue switcher in the last pic.
I railfanned the Bay Line back in '76, glad to see that they are still alive & doing well and not part of Rail America, etc.
I followed that line from I-10 down to Panama City along rt 231 a few weeks ago. I was wondering if it was a working RR. Saw a lot of cars sitting in a yard down in Panama City.
I heard the major railroads have a lot of idle cars and are in need of places to park them. Even the tiny Thermal Belt Line in Forest City, NC, is making a little extra money, storing rail cars.
This may be the case with The Bay Line. When I was there, the only “The Bay Line” labeled cars I saw carried pipe from a local company.

Ralph Berg said:Less than a year ago there were car shortages. Car builders couldn't deliver them fast enough. Another indicator that this isn't just a bump in the road. I noticed this past spring that the amount of lumber coming in on the local short line wasn't any where near what it was the previous year. And now, the outgoing Construction and Demolition Debris loads are down to a car a day from 3 or 4 a day just 6 months ago.

I just hope all these small operators have deep enough pockets to make it to the other side.
