The backwoods water tank

Here’s a couple shots of my double sided backwoods water tank. Everything except the spouts (Ozark’s) is scratched. The tank itself is made up of cedar “logs” roughly 1/2 x 1/2". I siliconed on each cedar shingle. The top finial is from a lamp. I’ll dunk the whole think in a bucket of stain and call it good. Now on to the sanding facility… jb

Neat! Box it up and send it over, you can make another one, right?

Nicely done!!

Nice work. What color will you stain it? How’s the quality of the Ozark spouts? Are they white metal?

Beautiful! Are those actual nuts/bolts/washers, or are they castings?

Nice job.
Beautiful.
I love the square design. You don’t see too many like it used in model railroading.
I’m planning on two spouts on the Lionel kit I have. It also has cedar shingles.

Thanks, guys!
Plastic or resin spouts. I had to hog out the ends to make them appear hollow.
All miniature real nuts and bolts doing exactly what they are supposed to do–bolt it together.
It will be the same stain as my oil tank next to it–dark brown.

Real nice John. A most worthy addition.

And…don’t let that “Bob fella” snooker you into sending it to him. What a terrible thing to suggest! Send it here instead.

Very nice John. You’ve been keeping all this talent secret for a while. Thanks for showing us

Was the square design inspired by EBT? All their tanks were round but enclosed in a square heated structure.

I just noticed that the picture makes the tank look crooked on its base.
It isn’t, just the photo angle. (Hey, I’m no photo genius–point and shoot! )
Also, the inspection hatch is an Ozark locomotive hatch. I noticed in the photo. I’ve since covered it with shakes, as well.
Hidden in all the frame work is the “frost box.”

The tank was based on a photo I found in the book about the Great Northern’s narrow guage rr in northern Washington and southern BC—The Kaslo & Slokan RR.

I have found my library of rr books to be the greatest source of ideas for my layout.

John:

Very nice!

Those ‘square’ tanks are among my favorite early day RR structures. They are prime examples of using available materials and technology to solve every day problems in the woods.

Wonder if any prototype ones still exist?

Happy RRing,

Jerry

Very nice, I like to see something different rather than the same old round tanks. I am in the process of making my own water tank as well, wish I went your route and made it square. As soon as I get it done I will post some pictures. Very nice work on yours

Very nice John. I have the perfect spot picked out on my layout for it so just bring it to the next meet and we’ll give it a home.

why would anyone put that in the backwoods??

that should be front line and center!!
