Since I grew up not too far from Aliquippa, and have friends who still live there, I found this piece rather depressing.
Yes, companies are in business to (primarily) generate income for their stockholders. Yes, many so called “rust belt” factories were woefully obsolete and environmentally “unfriendly”. (sadly, with professional “money men” running the show, short term profits are MUCH more important than long term viability through re-investment) Yes, hostile and unyielding trade unions are at least partly to blame for many if not most of the plant closings. However, the human cost of these radical changes in our economy continue to mount, and in many ways continue to be ignored. No, I don’t have an answer.
