Large Scale Central

The 50 Ton Diesel, Part One

Hey Matt, you are going to great detail and it sure is looking good, as I said before. Is this source of yours willing to make these horns available to the market? I could see a use for a couple of them.
I suspect so. E-mail me ...

Matthew (OV)

Nice!!

Ooh, I could use a couple of them myself…

More horns. Some for me, some for others.

Those horns are outstanding! What years was that engine in service?

The 50 tonner? Well … depends. Southern Pacific #1 arrived in 1953 and ran to 1961, thereafter went to Mexico, converted to SG (the trucks were SG all along, the wheels just had to be moved out on the axles) and it ran for … well, awhile, and still exists, though no longer serviceable. There were some near-twins built for Chiriqui Land in Panama that ran until … well, just recently, and two of them are now on the Sumpter Valley in Oregon, and at least one is being returned to service (there’s a Youtube video of the first crankup …) The two at the CRM, formerly Georgetown Loop, and before that US Gypsum are very similar, built 1958, and have been in service more or less ever since.

Bob … I like those on that roof! If you don’t want the spacer (or have a clearance issue…this loco is large enough as is…,) they should sit flat with the flat spot on the longest bell (which is prototypical…) I’m about to go downstairs and test fit mine on the 50 tonner …

Matthew (OV)

Ya know, though … I might be tempted to move those to the middle of the roof just to spare the engineman’s ears…

Nice…don’t paint em’

Real nice on the horns, and the 50 ton info is appreciated too.

That is very interesting info. It’s too bad it’s “too new” for my 1930s layout. The crew would really like it!

Well, it’s interesting. The design runs the gamut. GE built centercabs from the 30’s to the 70’s at least … take a look at http://www.northeast.railfan.net/diesel11.html for several photos (select the weight range at the top.)

The Valley RR in Essex, CT has a centercab built in 1937 that’s believed to be the oldest functioning example these days.

The Bachmann model (like Bob has) is one of the later editions … body features date it in the late 60’s and beyond. But, a little backdating is pretty simple to accomplish, if you wanted to.

Matthew (OV)

Oh, PS … the horn itself may be your limiting factor. The horn is a rendition of a 3 chime horn influenced by both Leslie and Prime … whose prototypes are often seen with parts interchanged, ie Leslie bells and Prime chambers, etc. (Prime is often referenced as a Leslie copy…)

The Leslie Supertyfon was introduced in 1951 … and the Prime horns appeared in 1972!

I’ll have to get a Bachmann centercab to backdate. Sounds like a fun project for the D&D.

Matt, has there been any progress on your build ?

Sorry, didn’t see this till just now (when an observant friend pointed it out!)

Between the holidays and starting the new year off sick, no, not much. But I’m hoping to fix that over the next few days!

Matthew (OV)

Sorry to hear you were feeling ill. I’ll wait, just wanted you to know there is interest.

I’m so close at this point to getting some paint on it … just a few more hurdles. Hopefully the “mass production” versions (that being the 01-04 units) will go much faster! Just had to work out the “how-to’s” of the first one … and for a first timer for a project like this, occasionally it’s a bit overwhelming.

How are you doing Matthew?

I got a Bachmann centercab from Ralph and now it’s time to back date it. Are there any pictures online of the Little RR 1937 centercab?

Here’s a Kennecott Copper centercab that was built in 1943. I guess no one liked those first five built in the 1930s!

That centercab has been around! It sat in my attic for 2-3 years before I sold it to Ralph. I guess he decided it was too big for hiss RR and passed it on to you

Since we were in Quartzsite over two weeks I haven’t even gotten to run it yet!
