Large Scale Central

That Stainz has sound??

Today I went to a local store that sells a little bit of everything including trains though this Summer they cleared out the large scale because it was a poor seller due to being over priced. For example they have a Bachmann green 2-4-2 “Lynn” on Clearance for $210. It was $400 at one time.

Anyways they still have large scale and Lionel in a Christmas display and on this setup was a black and red LGB stainz. I stooped down to have a better look as it went by and a salesman asked me if I had any questions. I said no but I was admiring that rare colour scheme on that stainz and it has sound too! He said it does? He pulled it off the track and I showed him the speaker enclosure in the cab and the 3 way switch on the back of the fire box. I switched it, he hit the power and sure enough it had sound.

Thank you Merry Christmas ! It’s kinda funny when people don’t know what they have.

I just saw this Stainz on Ebay yesterday and was surprised that it has sound and smoke: The price reflects the options…

That must be a newer production Stainz. Probably has the same sound as the Lehmann produced model. Basically one chuff per revolution. That’s alot of money for a Stainz when they are all over Evilbay for $100.00 +/- in excellent condition, but without sound. I made a sound/battery car using a bachmann HO gauge sound apparatus from their gondola with sound. It’s just the basic chuff but I installed three brass strips on one axle and use brass rod as contacts.

LGB put a chuff only sound in their work train. I bought a set over 10 years ago with this sound. It is a voltage sensing unit with speaker in the top of the cab. Unfortunately I did not like the sound as it was simulated sound and not very good.

I agree Dan P. I tracked down a green Stainz with sound at a good price and was very excited until I got it on the track and heard it…

I have a LGB 2-4-0 with tender that has sound and it is pretty good with the magnet activated bell and whistle but the Stainz disappointed.

I just thought it was funny that this store has been running this train since the end of October and they didn’t know it had sound.

Even some vendors don’t bother reading the manual ! Same with all consumer goods, imho.

Todd, The good news is that the engine has a great place for a hidden speaker and I converted mine to a digital decoder with sound.

A single motor LGB engine can be run with a HO decoder on DC and DCC and the decoder I used by Zimo was under $100.
