Thanks Jon. Hard to imagine its not railroad related because the “scene of the crime” is only “just a half a mile from the railroad tracks”.

And the church, where Alice & Ray lived, which is now the Guthrie Center, is right across the street from those tracks. The tracks then were either Penn Central or NY&New Haven when the ‘crime’ was committed. http://www.guthriecenter.org/

The Radio station I listen too plays it twice in the afternoon every Thanksgiving here. Have for years…I don’t want a pickle

I was, a long time ago, for a very short summer, a car host on the Berkshire Scenic, which passes by the church now … and it’s mentioned in the narration to the passengers. I was working for Conrail C&S out of Pittsfield that summer, and my boss, Rick Silva, was an engineer there on the weekends …

Ironcially, the hippie movement morphed into today’s environmentalists, who would gladly bring all the power of the State down on anyone illegally dumping trash these days.
