Texaco Billboard

Just received a custom made Texaco billboard from a vendor I found on ebay.

I supplied them the image and they made the billboard.

Just what I needed for this spot on the layout. And as always, for larger images and more layout images click on the link in my signature.

Now that is cool.

You said they supplied the billboard does that mean it was ready to plant?

Is it plastic, metal, wood??

Great spot coming into town.

I like the billboard but I want to see you pave them roads!

No way - the roads are perfect. Reminds me of the villages my friends and I would make in our backyards as kids. A regular garden hoe was our grader!

Edit to add - Billboard looks good Matt!

Wood. Redwood.

I saw their billboard on ebay (link to listing). I really liked the wood frame and style. I emailed them and sent the Texaco image and they built the billboard to fit the sign.

Not sure how weather proof it will be so I’ll cover it to protect from rain. I’ll also bring it in during the winter.

Paved? Ha roads in Silverton still are not paved in this day and age. In fact the road to our house (county road 501) turns to gravel a few miles before our driveway…which is also dirt/gravel. Paved on a steep road can be bad for ice in the winter…especially by us at 8000 feet elevation.

I thought about used hypertufa or similar to make roads. But then it just wouldn’t look right for Southwest Colorado. Especially when set in the late 1940s to mid 1950s.

Exactly how I learned to make roads. Still doing it on the layout. I use a block of wood to “grade” the roads.

True statement, We were in Silverton a few weeks ago and the streets were muddy.

In fact we live on a gravel road in Nor-Cal so these things still do exist.

Matt ,

I really like the look of your layout , you’ve managed to blend in with nature quite nicely .

It looks like the Hollywood towns where they play weird music as the lone stranger , who has left the I Route for fuel approaches , thinking ‘just a coupla gallons and on my way’

But then the Sherrif sees him and says ‘you look kinda new around here bwa , don’tcha’ —and he is never seen alahve again .

ta-ta-TAAAAN .

Girlfriend comes a lookin’ fer him

‘Yer look kinda lost ma’am can ah be of help?’

‘Sherrif , wha you wearin’ ma lurves watch?’

‘Sherrf, who’s that a drahvin’ ma lurvers car , he don’t even let me drahve it’

(Car drives slowly by with cross eyed hairy kid a drahv’n and look’n at the girl raht sexy like,

his granmaw throws a rock at him an sez 'Y’all come back here Ezra afo’yo’paw seezya , an I tell’t ya befaw , leave the dawg alone git a woman ’

Ta-ta-ta-TAAAAAAAAnn.

Yep , realistic layout brought that on .

There is this billboard and many others at Miller Engineering:

Gravel roads all over Nebraska, one right by my house. Many small towns here still have gravel roads in town. Could use chicken grit on them to simulate gravel.

That’s a rather attractive bit of mini engineering .

Yes, they are, aren’t they? They just aren’t suitable for use out doors, unless you take them inside at the first hint of moisture. Like the Wicked Witch of the West, they melt when exposed to water.

Sounds like most of the stuff I make .

I’ve got a couple of the Miller Engineering “neon” signs. Although these are all indoors on my HO layout.

I put two signs on this kitbashed Bachmann motel. I don’t think Miller makes these particular signs anymore.

I haven’t paved my roads on the layout since they wouldn’t go with the dirt road we live on.

Your sign looks great.
