testors dullcotte - is this the right one

I’m going to attempt some weathering this winter and it’s my first time buying this stuff. I just want to make sure this is it, because I’ve seen different kinds made by Testors.

Nope, that’s clear coat. Dullcote says Dullcote on the can. I use Krylon clear matt or flat since its just a bit more expensive for like 3 times as much, but that’s just me

always worked for me.

  1. I have started using the Krylon brand as it has UV inhibitors in it

  2. UV protection may not be needed if you only run indoors

Thanks David. So, it’s probably this one: http://www.walmart.com/ip/TESTORS-79660-FX-Spray-Lacquer-Dullcote-3-oz-TESR7660/38091984

Ahhh. you guys post fast!

O.k. So, krylon will work too.

Dave, N.B., Marconi , Mine will be outside.

THANKS!!!

Actually Matt what weathering I have done I seal it with hairspray of all things. If you change your mind or don’t like it later you can wash it off.

David, what happens when it rains?

I’m not sure I will bring my rolling stock in after every run. The engines will always come inside, but I may leave the cars out if the weather isn’t going to be bad.

I left some rolling stock out for a week, during which it rained three times. I had a friend over for an operating session, and he complimented me on my realistic weathering.

Steve, and you used the hairspray method to seal it?

Yes, that looks like the stuff. I guess they had changed the label since I bought it last. Like I said, I use Krylon for most stuff now, its less expensive per ounce then the “real” model paints.

I weather with acrylic paints. I do not seal with a top coat, because it affects the colour of my weathering. But I also don’t leave my toys out in the rain.

Thanks David. I’m too chicken to try it with paints…just yet. I remember my old weathering days with an air brush. That was in my ho scale days…many, years ago and it didn’t look good. lol.

Also, more than likely mine will end up in the rain a few times. I just don’t plan on bringing it all in every time I run it this coming summer. Now, if it is going to be 100+ degrees or storm, then yes.

I’d like to build a small yard that is off the layout somewhere that I can cover with a small over-hang. I have a few ideas. That way I can pull the cars in for daily storage. Although like in one of another of my posts, in a different thread, I don’t want to build too much here because I’m fairly certain we wont’ stay more than 4 years.
