Tearing into a Bmann 2-6-0

OK I got one of the old time Bmann 2-6-0s…got the ubiquitous broken axle gear…I have the replacement axle…but cannot figger out how to get it apart…it appears the the driver screws on someway but I can;t figger it out…or how to take the valve gear eccentrics apart…just hos do I get the new axle in there?

Bart

I have 2 of the moguls and a 4-4-0 to do also. If I were you, I get the NWSL gear instead of using the replacement Bachmann. It will over time crack again. The NWSL gear is Delrin and will not break. A drill press works great for pressing the new NWSL gear on the old axle.

I just hate for you to go to all the trouble now and have to do it again in a year or two.

As for how to do it, I don’t know yet.

Rodney

Drill press I got…and the inclination…and the confidence…just no plan on how to get her guts out! Ohh and where can I get a NWSL gear? and Which one do I need?

OK …I have answered my own silly question…and just to help ya out Rodney…

He’s probably gonna do that regardless Rodney!

Thanks Bart, That will help me when I tear into them

A word of advice; when removing the eccentrics, use tape or a clamp or something to hold all those pieces together so they come off as (more or less) one piece. Trust me. Trying to figure out how to put that puzzle back together once those pieces fall away and scatter to the winds is no fun.

On the gear, remove the gear from the gearbox before you order the replacement from NWSL. They sell two Bachmann replacement gears:

2223-6 - 24-tooth for the 4-4-0/2-6-0

2226-6 - 25-tooth for the 2-8-0

Trouble is, I’ve never seen a 4-4-0 or 2-6-0 with a 24-tooth gear. All the ones I’ve had apart have had the 25-tooth gear. (Others have reported the same thing.) I don’t know if Bachmann changed something or what the deal is with the 24-tooth gear. They very well may be out there, but I’ve never encountered them. That’s why I recommend counting the teeth on your gear before ordering the replacement, so you know you’re ordering the right one.

If you’re particularly adventurous, you can order a replacement motor from NWSL. They sell a 29mm x 35mm can motor that–if it’s the same one they sold a bunch of years ago–is a drop-in replacement for the Bachmann motor, and has a lot more torque. I can’t confirm the motor is the same, but the photo looks the same. 2.4mm shaft diameter, and the measurements match. I’ve got a few lying spare here that I bought years ago that I’ve put in my 2-6-0 and a friends 2-8-0, and it’s a night-and-day difference in performance.

Later,

K
