I’ve done this show 6 out of the past 8 years. A rough guess of 40 - 80 hours into prep & setup (I do have help).
It covers an area of about 18 x 27, consisting of 2 concrete tables with a 6 foot space between them.
This year we had 7 tracks running on 5 different levels with 8 bridges. Two of the tracks were running point to point.
As you can see crowd control is rather non-existant.
Even with that, there are relitively few people related issues. There are many places that would not work.
that said, I would not consider it being an ideal environment for a season long display.
We did not run last year. Judging from the response, people were glad to have us back.
It is amazing the number of people that have memories of trains. My father used to set up a train…
My brother filled up the basement… I used to take the trolley to work…
Some how seeing the trains stirs those memories up and they usually enjoy talking about it as well.
We have always included a scavenger hunt. It gives the kids something to occupy their minds and turns a 2 minute walk around into a 5-15 munite stay.
Here is the bottom line .
For me the trains are really secondary. Making memories and seeing families take time for each other is really what I like best.
Seeing a parent work with their kid to find ‘snoopy’, or better yet the people who are too ‘big’ for a scavenger hunt who then change their minds
and have a good time … We win.
And if they do get hooked on trains in the process…cool.
