Tagged Cars

Tagging comes up once in a while as one way to weather modern cars. The taggers are getting smarter, designing their artwork to leave the reporting marks intact. This way the railroads are less likely to ruin their work by painting boxes for reporting marks. I saw this example last spring on the local job. [url=lsc.cvsry.com/TagBox_1024-01.jpg]

If I were to ever have a tagged car on my RR this would be a design I’d consider. Can anybody make out what it says. I’m guessing Villains II, but there are a couple strokes I’m not sure of.

As much as I dislike the concept of tagging in general, I have to admit that the car is well done. It appears as though the artist went to great lengths to avoid panting over the reporting marks.

Saw one once and thought, “they should hire that guy!” It was just beautiful.

It is a treat once in a while to see a brand new car with no scribbles on it. Occasionally there is one that has art work that has to be admired. That one ya posted to a LOT OF WORK to paint like that.

That is an expensive tag job. The tagger must have used a few cases of spray paint to cover that much area. I wonder if he or she properly disposed of the empty spray cans or just tossed them around the tracks.

Wunder how big of a hole is the Ozone did all those spray cans cause?

Ooo, I want a “smite” key for my computer!

A little research on the web has revealed that this isn’t a “Tag”, but a “Signature” The little scrawls in dark blue spray paint are tags - Signatures are considered by many as folk art. The scale of this job would require scaffolding and high volume spray equipment. Probably painted by a team, led by the designer. With enough guys and the proper equipment this could probably be done in a couple of hours.

Taggers are usually gang members and their ‘weapon’ is stolen spray paint. The more thought out signature designs are done by street artists who generally use professional materials that they pay for. It’s still illegal, but personally I think a well done signature like this one is a whole lot better looking than a drab and dirty box car.
