Sutro Tunnel Model

Eric,

Thanks so much for your very generous compliments! I don’t deserve them, there being many here who are far, far better at modelling than I. But I truly thank you for believing this project to be at a “high” level in some way. Means a whole lot!

Cliff

Regardless of your skill level, and I think you under rate yourself, I commend you for your willingness to take on such a huge undertaking and stick with it without allowing frustration to put you off the project as it has done to me so many times.

The Sutro Tunnel group will be proud to display this.

Gotta remember there is the outside layout as well with signal lighting , upper deck , etc…It sure was a great time this past weekend and this is pretty much all I have left picture wise.

Jon, me too, so many times… Thanks for relating on that, and your commendation. Yeah, it’s been tough sometimes… And you bet, I’ll be glad to avoid learning curves for a while, haha!

The camaraderie with you and others here have made all the diff through this.

Camaderie is pretty easy when there’s NO Rooster. :innocent:

My last bits of detail in mind were human and mule & horse figures. I bought 1:300 humans on ebay, and since I had no time or patience to paint them, my wife Linda said to just paint them black, and it seemed like a good idea to me, so I did.

I’d printed lots of horses and mules, in many poses. But only those with tree stump legs from the stage coach printed with legs. I painted a few of the others though, cuz maybe I can plant them in “tall grass.”

The humans are slightly tall for this 1:320 model, so if it seems like it’s a problem, I may need to do a bit of mass amputation… but please don’t tell anyone.

The plan is to wrap up details like these, send them loose, and place them after the model is assembled on site. Just CA them in place, and call it a day. But I might futz with things a little more during this week… no, stop, pinch it off…

Next stop: breakdown and whatever, commencing big time on Saturday. With labor day, it’ll be a nice long weekend for this step.

Thanks for hanging in there with me everybody, and for all your wonderful encouragements. You LSC friends are the best.

Cliff

Thanks for all your photos Rooster! Awesome!!

And thanks to G-Scale Grover, this entire thread is again affirmed for Large Scale, woofrickenhoo!!!

Grover never wears clothes, so the stripper pole has always seemed like a natural fit. But what I don’t get is that he’s always flipping the bird… Issues there?

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

But you hugged in the photos, so all is good!

Don’t think many people will be looking that close at horse and people legs, plus many have not seen real horses up close to know the difference ! LOL

Amazing to see this thing getting close to completion. Incredible detail and execution of the project.

Thanks so much Bob, for your encouragement and of course for hosting this site. Your “living room” has long been my go-to place to share. And bitch and moan and joke. Thank you!!

Stumpy the horse turned out fine in the tall chaparral. Sleepy horse, with no legs involved, needed some scraping of grass to quit levitating.

Monday evening I decided to deal with a label or two for this thing, so I set up laser patterns for parts & drill jigs, and graphics for signage.

I cut those parts today and started the surgery. Kinda pegged the sphincter pucker gauge (yep, got mine from Harbor Freight)…

Running out of time for today, more tomorrow.

:poop:

For simple lettering, consider the Brother p-touch. You can use your computer to edit the text - it can be any font on your computer and any size. (up to the tape size, that is!) The tapes come in different widths (1/4", 1/2", 1") too. VERY easy to use! ( I would have included it in the Bag O’Junk™ that I brought up, but I find I still use it! :innocent:).

I have the Brother PT 1500 PC…not sure they even make it any more, but it works VERY well.

You can get multiple color tapes…black on clear seemed to be the best for outdoor use and I just painted the background the color I wanted.

Cliff,
It’s “Time” to disassemble and ship it how it is and my old buddy Quit Fukinwithit agrees. However remove the vinyl tape cause on the sides as it’s only gonna piss you off.

Just saying :rooster:

Is it disassembled and shipped yet as it’s been 5 days?

You have a model of his tractor but you don’t have the PRR K4 whistle!

Hollywood and I are headed there this Saturday if ya’ wanna pony up some balls and join us you only have about a 2.5 hour drive to see it then you could swing buy and visit the sacred ground of the Rooster Works .

Thanks Rooster for the invite, I’d sure like to! The annual steam show at WGHSEA looks like such a blast.

But yeah, I gotta pack, and this long weekend is the main breakdown & packing time. Though I’d wanted to start last Sunday I couldn’t help but finish out a couple details… And I kept myself to the important stuff and “low hanging fruit.” You didn’t like Stumpy?

Here’s the signage. Seems odd, but Linda says it looks good, and the black skirt will help unify things (I hope).

The text is easily replaceable, in case we think up better things to say out there.

Here’s a partial list of what I’ve kept myself from pursuing:

  • Kite up in the air (great Idea from Hollywood)
  • Flock of larger-scale vultures hung from the ceiling, circling a dead mule below (my fave)
  • Skeleton of a mule out in the desert
  • A “You are Here” sign (too disruptive; maybe a pointable laser coming down from the ceiling?)
  • A north arrow sign
  • Sutro mansion picket fences
  • Sutro mansion out houses
  • Better coloring for the waste dumps (should be more tan and streaked, not uniform gray)
  • Outer rock-like vinyl edge overlaid with something indicating the waste material portion (which sure wouldn’t look like rock in cross section)
  • QR Codes for each station (leading to a much larger web article)
  • Tiny props for Halloween season

Some of these may happen eventually. But as of this evening, I’m done-done, and pinching off all that.

I recently finalized the shipping date, and it’s Sept 18, so I’ll have 3 weekends to make crates and stuff crap in them. Saturday through Monday I’ll hit the packing hard. But I’ll thinking of you guys at the steam day.

And so it begins…

Rear panel and ceiling assembly:

Ok …What I failed to get was a picture of the wife’s Kinect toys spindle/spool on top of the record player and does is do 45’s and 78’s or only 16? It doesn’t matter either way as it’s used for spooling up yarn so perhaps it does according to the speed?

That was badass and she spanked you on simplicity with that one Cliff!
Camaderie is pretty easy when there’s NO Rooster!
“As Bruce says” …
However I failed myself trying to capture the essence of the Jennings Plantation as I had other things on my mind (like Hollywood driving there)!

Cliff,

It’s time to ship it, install it then move onto the next project of maintenance of what you have already!

Rooster, here’s Linda’s yarn winder (aka “swift”). Been going strong for about 10 years, on the same little belt inside the turntable. Speed control is via an inline lamp dimmer. We designed it together, and yeah, dirt simple.

First thing today was taking the cover down.

Took a while to get scratches out of the polycarbonate (using the heat gun method). Then clean and do a couple punch-list items. And yea, I took that tape off Rooster. Seems to look fine. Then I cut foam and stretch-wrapped.

Next is the model sections, and I got one done today. After cleaning some and securing the cables, I installed its shield-box-thing. This is assembled with wire ties (going thru slots in each tab, keeping the tab from backing out). That lets the shield be stored flat (by clipping the ties), and also have some give to it when screwed to the model section.

Then stretch-wrapping.

Tomorrow, God willing, will be the other model sections and all the console sections. And maybe start packing spares & tools, we’ll see. Monday I hope to start building the crates.

Sorry for this being so far from large scale trains, sheesh… So, here’s an attempt to get things back in line:

Thanks as always for watching,
Cliff
