Hans, judging by your photo you had to show proof that you were truly a “senior.”
Down here in So. California, no HOME DEPOT discounts I know of. The LOEWS and HOME DEPOT are within a mile of each other and there are competitive pricing signs on mainly the gardening items.
Any thoughts on the method you will use to run power leads. I buy the soil resistant Malibu 12 ga wiring off the bulk spools at the DEPOT. Cheaper than factory packs. Then again, perhaps you have moved your end of the hobby to battery power.
Please keep us groundlings informed on your innovative installation and any tips you wish to share.
Best,
Wendell
That picture is six years old, but I’ll postpone a new one 'til next year.
Yep, I get the 12 and 14 gauge off the spool, too. I’m doing the DCC route with a few extras i.e. section the layout into “blocks” that can be turned off. One instance would be run-away train because the battery on the R/C throttle is “0”. There is also trouble shooting i.e. if a “less than obvious” short circuit shows up, one shuts off all sections and adds one at a time 'til the short is present. Murphy’s Law says it will be the last one, doesn’t matter which end you start.
In addition to that I also run a CAN-Bus cable and plug-ins to all stations, having hardwired cabs for the yards means fewer Wi-Fi and/or R/C glitches.
A hefty, low voltage AC power bus completes the fun.
The sectioning I took from the prototype; not that I need to shut down the power at Bergün because some smart guy contacted the overhead wire with his log loader while crossing the track on the road. It was quite amazing how much action there was. One guy running for the distribution switch (across three tracks) the other guy running for the control panel to set the entry signals to red and getting on the radio.
I like it when things happen while I’m trackside to observe.
Mind you at Bergön I was so busy watching I forgot to film.
