OoooKay here’s the first train from Sunday 2014/10/05
and this is the second one of many. It was a bit of yo-yo action on Sunday, driving back and forth between more suitable locations.
And I got to practice a bit of faster running, too. Just in time for the extra training for XC skiing.
Nice spot HJ! Thanks for posting.
Thanks Jeff!
Number Three was a CN Sulphur Empties unit train rolling East. The sun glinting off the Thompson added the extra touch and played havoc with the exposure - but a bit of after production fixed that.
The fourth in this series
Spending a day in the Canyon sure recharges the batteries in a big way. Even if one chases, then re-tracks the road already traveled and does it a few more times (your mileage may differ).
Number Five is a long CN Mixed Manifest eastbound with plenty of empty grain hoppers to get filled and get the stuff to the ports.
A subscriber from Norway counted the cars on the above Mixed Manifest: 201 cars! That’s almost as long as the ones they run on the prairies.
#6 in the series is a CP sulphur empties unit train crossing the Nicola River Bridge just East of Spences Bridge.
Both the Nicola and the Thompson are at low levels going into Fall, a very big contrast to the torrent that rushes down the canyon in May and June.
#7 and counting.
Down the Canyon at the Nicoamen Bridge, just East of Thompson siding is a very good spot to set up both cameras and get the Eastbounds and the Westbounds as they pass.
And the scenery doesn’t hurt either. PS How many wells on this l-o-n-g Intermodal?
In Thompson Canyon, as well as occasionally in Fraser Canyon, I set up both camcorders if the location lends itself for clear fields of vision, zoom in on the location where the trains will first appear and then wait for matters to unfold.
This is the first video shot with the older HDC-TM90 that day. Missed it sneaking up the Canyon and only noticed when the wheel squeal started. Ah well, can’t win them all.
The 4400 engines are deceptively quiet when they’re on the flat or on a down grade.
Number Nine was shot at that neat place where the Nicoamen flows into the Thompson. Check those alarm wires, in case of slides, at the start of the shot
BTW the CP bridge at that location spans the road and the river. Very interesting road line quai as a prep for the hairy curves that follow right after. The speed advisory reads 40 kmh (25mph) and it is very good advise indeed.
One more to come at the same location, shot with the same TM-90 cam.
The tenth video of the series. Still at the Nicoamen/Thompson confluence. Another Grain train with a lot of colourful cars.
More coming, it was a busy day.
Number 11 was the interlude when there was plenty of time to watch and listen. There are several good spots at Skihist Provincial Park to shoot video and/or stills. The section of the CN line is referred to as avalanche or slide alley.
An alternate spot is the Kumsheen camp.
Some time ago, by request, I started to add location maps to the videos. Then I decided, nah, let them pay attention to find the spots or find their own. Approx. mileage mark along the rail should suffice.
Nice videos Hans. That is some serious product being moved by those trains there and that is some seriously epic lord of the rings middle earth landscape.
And then the trains kept coming. No, not the Westbound variety I was waiting for, three Eastbounds in a row - well almost, they were very closely spaced.
12 was a CN Intermodal, the wheel squeal at that spot was a steady concert
What did I do while waiting? Sat on a tree stump, picked dry grass to be broken into 1/4" pieces and watched the river flow. Highly relaxing stuff.
PS Thanks Todd!
Lucky Thirteen was the Coal Empties Unit Train (from the teaser)
Probably 152 empties, I didn’t count.
Second to last for that day (aka Number 14) was an almost Mixed that probably started out as a Grain Empties until someone decided to tack on some more at the front. It’s a CN thing that really gets the personnel riled when it happens along the route. Anyhooooo
After this one and still no indication of a Westbound - the shadows slowly worked their way through the valley bottom - it was time to call it a day. Five km up the road and the Westbound appears around the curve. 180º and back to Skihist!
It seemed to take forever … but that Westbound finally appeared. Since the light started fading and shadows climbing I decided that’s it, enough for today.
I could have figured on it, driving East there were three more Westbounds coming down the Canyon. Never mind, 290 km (180miles) to get home.
And that was it for that day and enough for 15 videos.
Video#15; one subscriber counted the cars: 209!!!
