Large Scale Central

Sunday Afternoon In The Shops

Or…“I Beat Bob To It”… So having dozens of long term projects, and nothing that looks like being finished soon, I found my inspiration waining…so needed something I could finish in an afternoon. Harking back to something Bob and I had discussed in one of our early morning coffee sessions, and I had been kicking around for some time, I decided TODAY WAS THE DAY! I was going to add peaked ends to a hopper. I have for a while been converting Bachmann Big Hauler hoppers to operational quality 1:20 scale cars by adding width, and I sorta was trying to get away from the distinctly East Broad Top look of these cars. The peaked end add ons were fabricated from a styrene No Parking sign and some .040 strip, and the application of some Plastruct zees. Rebuilt the brake staff with my own resin cast parts…

Heres a shot showing an un modified car on the left, a widened car in the middle, and of course the peaked end retrofit on the right…

Now with paint and decals applied, ( yes Bruce, I still have to add the airlines) I think i succeeded in creating a unique class of cars for the West Virginia & Kentucky …

Interesting.
I assume the bulkheads at the end are to keep the load from spilling on the tracks and all over the couplers whilst loading.

Looking good! Don’t use up all of those hoppers. I think you still owe me one or two widened ones

Nice to see your Mojo’s working again…(without a trip to Ric’s)…

nice work, Bart…

I just keep sayin' to myself that Quality Work takes time :)

You notice I still haven’t mounted that tank. I decided I needed to build a second flat and run the floor boards lengthwise. No sense in ripping up a nice looking finished flat. I also want to see if I can buy the tank straps from Cliff.
