Summerland Chuffers

I’ve recently installed Summerland Chuffers in both of my engines - very pleased with the results, they sound a lot louder and ad a lot
to the operating experience. Got them thru NGT Models, recommend them for good service and prices.
Interestingly, the 40 psi Plantation engine sounds slightly louder than the 60 psi WD Baldwin - possibly because the Plantation
has a slightly larger diameter stack for the chuffer to resonate off of.

So now both of my engines are accessorized with; Summerland Chuffers, WeeBee pop valves, and Accucraft lube drain cocks.

Next steps whistles, possibly Regner?

A Summerlands Chuffer, and a WeeBee Safety Valve is a great combination, as shown Here on my Roundhouse Katie.

I Agree! I have the chuffer installed and the pop valve is on my list. The drain cock is a nice addition too, but I’m cheap and don’t mind dealing with the fidly one that comes standard

I, too, am becoming a cheapskate in my old[er] age. I’m going to do without the great-looking blowdown valves on my locos so I can afford to buy a clothe.

Anyone running a whistle?

OR, any info on the Regner whistles?

Tom - nice video!
Those Katies are good looking little tank engines - and she sounds great too!

Where do you get your engine men figures?
That looks like another needed accessory…

Jim,

I purchased him five or six years ago at Diamondhead. Then again, maybe it was closer to ten; time flies when you are having fun.

Some guy was selling them, and I thought they were overpriced, but I had to have one. I tell people my guy is Papa Boule, the old French engineer from that magnificent movie, The Train. His right leg is missing, so he can straddle the steam oil lubricator. He is a real crowd pleaser.

Regner whistles? Fine for Brit/Euro teeny trains. Me, I can’t hear them, but my dog can.

Uh, somewhat $$$-y, too, if that matters.

Over in the USA you have Mr Weltyk [SP?] and his fine products - also $$$-y. It’s very hard to downscale a whistle to our size of train without them sound like a waterflea-parp.

I istalled the wee bee pop valve in my forney. What a difference. I also had the chuffer in the forney and loved the sound but I had problems with it. It wasnt getting enough draft to keep the fire going. Once the engine warmed up it worked fine but till it warmed up the fire would always go out.

My friend has a whistle, not sure what brand, but it sounds good on his modified ruby. I would love to add one but as tac said $$$$$$

Here is a picture of old Papa Boule…

Lookin’ good, Tom!
That was/is a great movie.
It’s hard finding figures for our trains - except for the Bachmann people.

tac - I’ve heard a Regner whistle (a couple of them) up at the club, and they are not so bad. They are NOT chime whistles by any means, but at least they are a voice for the engine. the whistle owners say the Regner will sound off at pressures as low as 20 psi (the chime whistles need around 50 psi to sound off), and Regner offers the best commercially made whistle valve out there. The size of the Regner will allow mounting on smaller engines. At $49 US, that is not a bad price compared to others.
I like the sound of Mr. Weltyks whistles, but they are large dimensionally, take a lot of pressure to blow them, fairly expensive, and worst of all I can never get ahold of him-
he never answers his emails.

Shawn - your Forney must have a small inside diameter stack on it for the Chuffer to smother the flame. Are you using the correct model Chuffer?
The SCAC2 Chuffer for my WD Baldwin has a smaller diameter body on it than the SCAC22 Chuffer for my Plantaton engine.
Neither of them puts out the fire…
Why don’t you contact Chris Bird from Summerland Chuffer at [email protected] and ask him about your problem - he’s very helpful.

+1 that advice about Chris Bird. I’ve often met him beak to beak at shows and he’s not only extremely helpish to noobs, but is a mine of useful information for those who think they know everything, but as Pres. Reagan noted - ‘they know a lot of stuff, but it’s all wrong’.

We are deeply envious of anybody with a Roundhouse Forney, BTW, they are now fetchig stooopid money over here in yUK, so if you have one, hold on to it. The AccuCraft one can be made to look just as good though, IMO. At the recent show here in Peterborough I asked Roger Locksley of RH if he ever considered making it again, and got a firm ’ no, there is no real call for it to be reintroduced’. Shame that, I replied, because, I said, there are four of us right here today looking for one with ££££ in our pockets. Shrug was his answer.

Ho hum.

Tac I find it hard to believe that a fine Gentalmen like you would or could be a cheapskate.

David, I’m afraid it goes with the Jewish heritage. My great-grandfather almost went bust in the closing years of the 19th century, having gone bust once supporting the Condederacy in their struggle against the Northern Agression. His main aim [he was in the newspaper and printing industry] was to figure out a way to use THREE sides of a piece of paper and thereby save a whale of $$$$$ in production costs. He was a great fan of Herr Klein, inventor of the rather odd-looking bottle named after him [look it up].

Tac;

Well maybe JJ could figure out a press that could print on the Kleinsche Flasche, but the rest of us poor mortals are out of luck!

Best,
