Large Scale Central

Styrene online

After spending a lot of time looking around here on the desert for a styrene supplier I have decided that I’ll only be able to get it online.

It doesn’t look likr I can get it from Evergreen unless I buy it in large quantities.

Who’s a good, dependable online supplier?

Here’s one source: http://www.hobbylinc.com/prods/uq_evg.htm

They don’t have everything though, so I get some stuff from InternetTrains. They used to have pretty bad service but now they’re under new ownership. So far, I haven’t had any problems:

Doug,

What are you looking for?

Hi Barry

Our hot, dry weather on the desert is just too hard on any kind of wood structure so I’m switching to styrene.

I figure I’ll start by building frames for those Colorade Scale Structures buildings and putting porches on them with covered walkways. From there I’ll branch out.

I’m really happy with how that styrene glue holds up in the heat.

We’re not as hot as you. We ONLY get to about 111!

Hey Doug,

Try one of your local sign shops, must of them use different types of styrene and plastic in larger signs. I picked up a couple of .080 thick 4’ x 8’ sheets for 25.00 ea in Spokane, Washington. If they don’t carry it they should be able to order it.

Doug:

For ‘shapes,’ Evergreen or Plastruct are the best bets. Lots of hobby shops and other dealers carry their lines and sell smaller quantities.

For sheet materials, I use TAP Plastics. Their San Leandro, CA store is managed by Russ Miller. Russ is a long time skilled LS modeler, the current president of the Bay Area Garden Railway Society, and is very knowledgeable in all areas of plastics, fabrication and joining. His store has laser cutters that will produce virtually anything that can be cut from a sheet of plastic for very reasonable prices. Lots of folks use Russ to supply building and car parts for custom projects. He is also an expert in things like molding materials and other specialized stuff. He is very accommodating to fellow modelers.

Russ can be contacted at his store:

Hope this helps.

Doug, you might try Nationwide Plastics as a supplier. I needed some sheets of plastics a couple of years ago and I found these people in Jackson. They have other shapes also.
