Large Scale Central

Stretched Bachmann log cars

Well,

Since I could not find any extensions for the Bachmann log cars I decided to make it myself. I ended up sacrificing one of my log cars to make the extension. I did not totally loose it it just will remain the original length once i place extension back together.

I Original car is scale at 18’ at 1:20.3 scale. With the new extension it would move to 24’ in length. I took the original car and marked off a 6 scale foot section. I used my Microlux table saw to remove the section. I then cut a piece of basswood to the correct size and length . I glued the bachmann piece together and then installed to new wooden extension.

I then molded the piece. The new piece came out pretty nice. once the mold was complete I then cast me first part. When casting I cast over several pours. I pour some resin in each half to make sure I get the bolt detail. while it is still curing i add a piece of 3/16" x 3/16" key stock to add strength to the section. Not full length just across the middle part.

Here is the new piece in place. It is not glued in yet but is held n place when the car is screwed back together…

Here is the car with the piece in place. I don’t have the correct color to mold in the color but I did find an acrylic paint that closely matched the original color. Here it is painted. I will go back and add filler or a strap to cover the joints .

Here are a couple pic’s of the finished car. The color is close. with some weathering you probably won’t be able to tell. The bolt pattern turned out to be pretty close too.

Landrel it looks good! Sorry I didn’t get the length measured The log cars are packed away in the barn for the winter. But you’re about dead on with the length.

Thanks Terry,

I looked at one of your pictures and was able to look at the wheel distance and then figured the length. It came out to 6 scale feet…

Thanks again Ty

I made a video on how they are installed into the log car…

Looking good Landrel now when do you start making more and selling them to the rest of us? I guess I should have watched the video before I asked the question. Dah!!!

Chuck

Chuck he has them for sale on his site for $8.50
Mike

Hey Chuck,

Yeah everything I make for my Home layout and My modular layout, I usually make a mold of it and then put it on my website. I have been making parts for Model airplanes and it kind of lapsed over into my train hobby.

You have the option to put a " link " to your web-site in your signature.

Thanks Sean. I did not think about that …

Nice site!
I will have to spend some time on it!

Nice job. Tk’s for the post.

Just out of curiosity, were the real ones 24 foot? Just curious why you decided to extend them.

I am not sure If the real ones were 24’. But with doing mostly 1:20.3. The longers ones look better…

I just made a log for the longer ones . I am going to make several sets of these . This log only weighs 0.9 oz and is 24 scale feet.

I still have to get the paint a little better…
