Thats very cool!
Thanks Shawn for posting a great snow plowing video, for us west coast guys! Great shot of the brute force(1:30) of that little consolidation pushing through that deep drift.
They get some pretty good drifts out there in that open farm country. I never knew they actually used that plow…
Great video, Shawn… thanks for sharing…

Very cool. It would almost be worth the 3+ hour ride down there to see this is in person. I wonder how you could get some advance warning of a plow train.
Neat! Had my favorite station at around 2:30 and I liked it coming through the cut at 4:00.Thanks Shawn

According to their website they run through the end of the year - daily the week between Christmas & New Years. Looks like they shut down completely in January. I know they open very early in the Spring (ECLSTS), but not sure about dates during the winter.
Gents,
That’s my local shortline. The video shown was on their opening weekend this year, which is President’s Day. Sometimes there is some snow, sometimes not. This year, they probably would have stayed shut down, but had that photo charter scheduled, so they had to open the line. The 8168 diesel was down for repairs, so that’s why you see 475 doing the plowing. I think they derailed the plow once or twice. We rode the opening day trains (in the President’s car this past year). 89 had a lot of trouble getting out of paradise and they had to cut off two cars when they got back for the 1pm train. The drifts were so high in one of the cuts, snow was hitting the rear view mirrors on the President’s car.
The Strasburg has really jumped in to the freight business. They do pickup and drop offs two days a week, I think Wednesday and Saturday. So, I’d expect that during their 6 week passenger train hiatus (Jan 1- Feb 12ish), they still will be out there doing the freight pick up and drop off. And plowing, as necessary. Incidentally, the plow they normally use stays in the shop area. Is there another plow behind the strip mall?
THat was a great video. Thanks for posting

Actually, that locomotive is not a 2-8-0 Consolidation; its a 4-8-0 Mastadon! Very few railroads had that type, but the N&W and (I think) the Great Northern seemed to like that wheel arrangement. They were Class M on the N&W. The crews referred to them as “Mollies.” They lasted to the end of steam on the Abingdon Branch, as their many axles spread the weight out for the bridges while more modern locomotives proved too heavy.

It was out behind the car shop all summer, so that’s why it is strange they’d move it to the other side of the 741 crossing this time of year. I did see the GP-30 outside last Saturday. We were over at the museum for a reading of the Polar Express in an old Reading MU commuter car.

Now that’s how you raise the next generation of model railroaders. Great Mark, just great!
