That’s some neat stuff Darryl. Looks like you had a really swell trip in spite of the rain. The RR’s over there have always fascinated me. The little sugar cane lines were especially full of character. Thanks for the photo trip!
Richard Smith said:Well Richard that was just one of the few good days in the two weeks that we were there as most were rather rainy. I wanted to get some pictures of Dole's little train line but then the weather was not right then. I picked up a case of pneumonia some where along the way which bit into our plans quite a bit but I survived and we plan to go back again in November.

Cheers,
Geeeze sounds like my Honeymoon in August…couple of nights in ICU cause of a nasty bug…talk about an EXPENSIVE room for the night!!!
My memory of Hawaii is clouded by the hospitality routinely shown to visiting Air Force crews by the USAF and USN . By golly , they were nice chaps , we could hardly stand after only a couple of minutes in the Top Three , or the other clubs whose names escape me . If you were there in the fifties and sixties , I raise my glass to you , USAF or USN --yes TOC ,even the unmentionable people from underwater , we met them too , just to know who we’d been pinging .
But , as usual , I digress .
The pics of the railway are very interesting , this railway has close ties with the White Pass outfit , I visited there and stayed sober enough to remember ; the Hawaii outfit was unknown to me , so the pics make up for a gap in my knowledge and are very welcome for it . Let’s have more , and THANKS .
Mike
Mike…There is a great book out (The name escapes me) on the railways of the island. It covers the complete history and more. You would appreciate the photographs.
To bad how the Pineapple crop is slowly disapearing…almost none now. Dole is now harvesting them elsewhere, where labour is less expensive, and taxes are lower.
A friend just returned from the Big Island to tell me that we can buy pineapples here in Ottawa, for almost $2 Cnd less than you can buy them at market stands in Hawaii.
Too bad; seems the natives of the Islands have priced themselves out of another market.
All that seems to be left is tourism, and that is such a fickle market.
It seems to just cheapen any place that depends on it…just look at Florida…
Hawaii has such interesting history and culture, but will loose it to the crass of tourism.
The friend was also very disapointed…he and his party were met with cool and damp weather…but then they could have stayed home; here in Ottawa, and had great weather…and spent the money on LS trains…maybe…!!!

Fr.Fred,
Knowing the chaps on the forum as we now do , it’s a pound to a penny someone will come up with the title .
Ottawa , yes , Canada . Mmmmmm . My recollection of Canada , apart from the BC end of the WPYR is of survival instructors frightening the shot out of us by mentioning "the big bars oot there " not bars as in drunk as a skunk , but bars as in grizzly . Listening to the trees cracking in the cold all night brought pictures of great hairy things prowling around . I would gladly slosh the bloke who told us , because grizzlies were hibernating , we , on the other hand , having small brains and a vested interest in survival , walked around muttering "yo bear " so’s we didn’t come up on them suddenly , but gave them warning . Well , we never woke any up , so blueberries must be good for you .
You reading this Maurice ? Do blueberries make you hibernate ? Go kick an alligator for me .
