I printed in PLA and the only parts I’ve smoothed are the end caps. I used 3 coats of Rust-oleum Gray Filler Primer (sanding between coats). I will probably do the same with the flat sides of the end platforms but the rest of the parts should be fine with just paint (10 ft rule).
What diameter tubing is that? Is it styrene or abs or pvc? (I ask this because you could not have printed it and not smoothed it clearly).

It’s Schedule 40 3" (3.5" OD) PVC. This is not a fully 3D printed model. If you check out the Thingiverse page https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3239142 you will see a list of all that is needed.

In my research I found Tank cars made in many different lengths and diameters. The 3.5" OD pipe is 8’ 5.5" diameter in 1:29. I have ordered some 4" OD Aluminum pipe which at 9’ 8" will be closer to the 9’ 10"-10’ range of a General Service Car.

I bought these in bulk from him on eBay http://www.roll-ez.com/product/1pair-strongest-bettendorf-upgrade-freight-trucks/ . They are nice looking and super strong. However, I plan on shaving off the center caps and drilling them to accommodate bearings and working center caps.
Interesting bending jig there on Thingverse.
Added a control valve based on the New York Air Brake DB-60 and some holes in the reservoir to accept piping. Question for 1:29 folks, What size wire do y’all use for grab irons?

But rooster, that must be off from correct scale by at least 0.000004" !!! what the heck? Oh the humanity!

So that’s 1.19mm. Thanks! That’s close to 17 Gauge (1.15mm) which I what I was thinking would be a good balance of looks/durability. 3d printed parts that small would be too fragile but 17mm Electric fence wire should work!

Keep in mind this is still a work in progress. I’m working on a jig to make grab irons and will add holes to accept them. Also, I bought some 4" OD Aluminum tube and will rework the parts for that size. Adds $$ to the build but closer to most common prototypical tanks. I figured out each PVC pipe car costs me $38.88 to build. The aluminum pipe will add $12.
