Steel Wheels

I’m looking for steel wheels! I have gotten Gary Raymond wheels for at least 1o years and I’m sick of his lack of business sense. I’ve been waiting for 2 1/2 months for some wheels from him. He’s like a lot of American businesses , they only have a business to have time off! Are there any other steel wheels available !

Sure there is!
Bachmann, USA, Aristo all make steel wheels.
(But you won’t like them as well as GR’s.)

Is that what they are making here ?

All these other wheels are just as expensive as GR. I Know that GR are very well made and roll well. I guess I need to buy wheels before I buy a car. Either that or take all the metal wheels off my indoor layout and use plastic.

Poss,
I stopped by Jim’s today.
He sent GR over $500.00 three weeks ago for an order.
He’s just as fed up as you are.
Even though GR told him they are in stock…

Calm down…
We’ll git your wheels…

Fred,

Check out the wheels from Jay Bee Bennett Enterprises Model Trains… He makes wheels for large scale too… The one I use is .890 inches in diameter on oar cars, the other is 1.1 inches in diameter… They have a good profile & they roll good…

Cheats,

Did Chucked Up get to be a dealer for wheels?

Yes, the Chucker did.
We’ll see, huh?
Then Poss can have all the wheels he wants.
(Me too).

I have been using wheels from Sierra Valley Enterprises for many years. All of his wheels are steel. They come finished in bright nickel plate, black nickel plate and unplated. For my applications they are the best wheels made.

Owned by Gary Watkins, he also supplies Hartford Products and Ozark miniatures, and others. Builds for all large scales, including 7/8N2 which call for thicker wheels.

I’ll back Barry up on wheels from Gary Watkins.
I have soem of his drilled 7/8n2 sets.
Superb.

I also would agree 100% with Tony and Barry on the SV wheels. Roll beautifully and and the finish is excellent. Got mine thru Gordon at Argyle Loco and took less than a week.

I need to add an unusual feature of Sierra Valley Wheels. I don’t know why but they appear to be more prototypical than they are actually. I believe it is due to the angles and the fillet along with the finish that give them such a good look. Have to take that last thought back, because they still look ‘right’ even when they’re dusty and dirty.

I also have permission to use the Sierra Valley profile when I turn wheels for my products. In the case of the 4-6-0, the flange is a little taller, in anticipation of some of the superb roadbed and track leveling we have to live with.

As Tony mentioned above, SVE also has spoked steel wheels. And they are gorgeous.

Barry,

Does Gary have the spoked wheels in the correct size for the 1:20.3 Mason-Bogie tender truck? Good to hear from you.

John Lyans

John,

Good question. I supply the 20.3 26" wheel (1.280") for the MB tender truck. In black nickle finish.

Gary’s website is: www.sierravalleyenterprises.com

I didn’t find them listed, an email should suffice: [email protected].

He promoted a pretty wide range some months ago, should be able to supply you.

Good to hear from you.
