Steam Donkey

M&M rail road has gotten the approval from the financial secretary to add a siding for the blue stone quarry, construction will start in the spring. So to that end the quarry will need a crane to load the stone. Being as one of my hobbies is wood turning I will be turning what I can.

Turned the spool for the cable, the small wheels are the fly wheels where the rods from the steam pistons will connect. The bigger wheel will be the gear on one end of the spool, still working on shaping the teeth on the gear.

Tuning the fly wheels, first at the drill press I drilled part way on both sides to create the rim then used a hole saw to drill the center hole and cut the out side diameter, then to the lathe to clean up the out side. The gear was cut with a hole saw then turned on the lathe, the small circles are drilled with fostner bits.

My lathe has a indexing wheel, used that to mark the teeth for the gear.

I LIKE it. That is going to be a neat build and you are already off to great start. :grinning:

Added more pipping, put the winch together and made a skid.

You guys keep spitting this stuff out with no blow off valve!

I don’t care cause I don’t like steam anyway and if blows I won’t see it.

However noting Marks location it might be a killer northern borealis some evening on my back deck?

Cool project! Looks good so far!

I knew there was something I needed to add, I will add couple gauges and a whistle. Keep an eye out your back deck you never know when one of the workers fails to see the pressure get to high. :joy:

Thanks, the RR is keeping me busy in retirement, and its fun too.

My wife (financial secretary) thinks I should leave it unpainted, she likes the wood, copper and brass, I like it too but :man_shrugging:.

You could make 2… 🫠🫨🤭🫣

@Rooster I have added couple gauges and a blow off valve/whistle that should keep it safe.

@Hines We have come to a compromise she will be painting the white plastic flat black, leaving the copper and brass as is and the wood parts a color of her choice. I may still make a second one to run a crane at the quarry.

Mark,

That’s great now when I head up that way I wanna PULL YOUR WHISTLE !!
Just like I did here!

Its back from the paint shop, I think my wife did a good job.

Nice build, Mark. And yes, I agree, the wife did a great job on the paint.

With this much skill, there may have to be 2 Lockburner teams next year.

Thanks for the compliments, we are both having fun with the trains.
