Steam? Aristo 0-4-0 worthy?

I have one live-steam engine – a Ruby, built from a kit.
Entertaining! Yes, it runs only on flat track – a 10’ circle designed to accasionally run it.
So any experience with the Aristo 0-4-0 Why? It is on sale via e-mail ad at TrainWorld for $499.00
Works? Worthwhile? Tricky to “time?” Ruby was.
Wendell

On sale at $499.00? Jeepers - here in UK it is on sale at a ‘special price’ of around $1200 or so…

To tell the truth I’ve not read anything about it anywhere, let alone how it runs. I am led to believe that the prototype was a Pennsy yard goat, but to me it still looks a mite odd. But hell, if I had to pay only $500 for it I’d take your arm off. After all, it IS a live steamer for the price of a good meal in the 360 restaurant.

Wendell I was wondering the saem thing…

Chas

Buddy of mine got one and is having trouble with it.I have not gotten over to see it yet. I know on the Aristo Live Steam forum there were a few posts, some lucked out, some were having problems. I guess the cylinders/boiler would be worth that.

Over on MLS is a guy who is having problems raising steam over 15psi…sounds like a problem to me - with HIS anyhow.

Not seen one yet here, at the price I’m not too amazed…

Tac, that is the guy I was talking about. I’m sure someone will bug Bob to put his real name on there!

Is the conscensus on the Aristo steam site this ditty is to be avoided?

Best buy in US-outline scale steam?

No contest - it’s the AML 0-6-0 Switcher [1/29th] followed closely by the AccuCraft version [1/32nd]. Third place, the new 0-4-0 saddle tank from the same company…too early for any reports, but it looks like a little gem to me.

They are all made entirely of REAL brass, copper and stainless steel - NOT plastic. And forget the r/c on a little loco like this - it’s about as useful as t*ts on a lobster.

My $0.02

Well at that price you can buy and if it flops AC will pick it up free and fix it and send it back to ya. Not to bad a deal. Yep some work some have had problems. Latest one was no control for the forward or reverse movement plus could not keep pressure up. Later RJD

Wel now, that’s just fine and dandy IF you live in the lower 48 - if not, however, like Alan and me [3500 miles away in Ye Olde Lande of ye Miserie & Dyspondencie], Korm [12,000,000 miles away on planet Patagonia in the Zorq system] you’ll have a REAL rpoblem when this loco falls of its perch.

RJ-
Tac’s concern is also for the 48 – any more data on the pressure loss? My take is there is a boiler leak or problem with the cylinders. As to the radio control, either the servos are not functional, the signal is screwed-up, or the transmitter is whacked.
Lastly, any data from Aristo as to their analysis of foibles with their 0-4-0 steamer? I wonder if TrainWorld is dispensing with their inventory because of the very problem you noted.

Thanks for any further data you have as to anticipated likelyhood of problems - e.g. the loss of pressure, etc.

Wendell: You can go to the AC forum and do a search for further problems with the 0-4-0 . I requested from the last poster if he would let us know what the cause of not being able to make the loco move using the the R/C he did not mention if he could operate it manually. He did return to AC for the fix. Also being new AC will issue you a pick -up ticket and the cost to you to return and send back to you is zero bucks. As I said at the going price sounds like a good deal. Later RJD

Thanks - will check the AC forum.

Damn, I’ve not been able to “log in” over there for a while now… Can never remember my password and resetting it is a pain.
