Large Scale Central

Station Interior detail and paint color

I know that someone in this group has the answer. I would like to know what the interior color of the Chama Station is and if it has wainscoating in the passenger waiting area? I have not been able to locate that information doing a search, so hopefully someone here knows or has photos of it.

Thanks in advance.

Dan S.

This fellow built one for Tom Miller.
I’m sure he went and photographed the prototype before he detailed it.
You could e-mail him and ask.

3 pages of pics of the model.

Thanks for the replies guys, this is just what I was looking for. I am in the process of building the Cumbres Station, Not the Section House that is now used as the station, but the larger one that was torn down in 1956. It is being built in 1:22.5 scale and I have it about 3/4 complete. I am assuming here that since the Cumbres Station and the Chama Station were both built around the same time that the interior detail and paint would be very simular. Like I said this is an assumption as I have not been able to locate any information on the interior of the original Cumbres Station. The interior wall arraingment that I have done is based on what I call Logical enviromental engineering. In short what that means is that you take into consideration logical placement of doors and walls based on what they were leading to and what they were for. example: you would not have a door leading from the waiting room on a Station into a bedroom of the station master. Likewise you would not have a door leading from the living quaters going into the Baggage room. So taking these things into consideration, I think I came up with a logical placement of the interior walls and doorways. If anyone has any photos or a real florplan of the station I would love to see them. My long term goal is to build the compete Cumbres Pass area, that will include as many of the structures that I can get information on. Right now these will include the Original Station, The Section House, The Water Tank, The Snowsheds, Possibly the covered turntable, as well as a number of the small sheds located around the area. The Trackage will be layed out as it looked in 1920. here are a few photos of the construction.

Love to hear your comments.

Dan, Station looks great so far, nice job…

Very nice. I love the peaked top windows. One of my unfinished projects calls for them.

All the windows, doors and roof support details are all custom made for this project. I looked a the Grandt Line, Russ Simpson and a couple others that offer castings and none had the correct design for the Cumbres Station. So I made a master of each one and then cast my own doors , windows and trim in Resin. I have to admit that the Roof supports really came out better than I had expected. When I made the molds I designed the Windows so that only the frames were cast. The window sashes were a seperate casting, that way I would just glue the sashes into the window frames and if I wanted to I could have some of the windows in the open position. This simplified the molds and made it easier to cast the parts.

I will post more photos later in the week.

Dan

nice work so far.

Wow, Dan! You are my kinda modeler. Looks great. Can’t wait to see the next chapter of your station saga.

Looks great so far!

That looks like a great project!

I used to have a drawing of the interior layout, but i think i sold it with my hoN3 laser kit. you might contact american model builders for a copy of there instructions, as i belive the interior walls were included in there kit

Al: I think I saw a photo of the inside of thier station and I had an issue as to where the door was going into the private area of the station. The had the door going into the kitchen area right in the waiting room area of the station. I hardly beleive that in real life you would have had access to private living area in an area where the public would be all the time. It seems to me that the door should have been in the station master office area and behind the ticket counter area. Also if you looked at where the door was placed it would have blocked access to the chimney to locate a cooking stove or pot belly stove for heating the area. I took all these things into consideration when I placed the doors and interior walls. It is something I call Logical Living dynamics. I have done a bit more on the Station and currently working on the Roof. I was going to use oak veneer for the ceder shingles, but I didn’t have enough so I ordered shingles from Minatures.com. They should be here in a week.
