States with budget deficits

Interesting list. Other than Alabama and Georgia, these states are considered by most to be wealthy states with wealthy priced real estate. At least two, Nevada and New Jersey, have major gambling.
Sad thing is most budget cuts are coming from education and health care.

Having lots of fight over that here.

Budget has deficite.
Governor tells legislature to raise revenue.
Legislature makes a plan.
Governor won’t approve it without expanded gambling.
Legislature tells governor where to go.
Governor cuts programs to balance budget.
Legislature sues claiming governor can’t cut programs…

Interesting Pa didn’t make the top 20… Maybe it’s because the legislature hasn’t voted themselves a midnight pay raise recently. Or because they ALREADY put the screws to education (both public and colleges)…

Considering they want to make I-80 a toll road and lease the Turnpike to help pay for all the bridges they haven’t fixed in the last 50 years and to subsidize the busses in Philly and Pittsburgh, I figured we’d be higher up on the list.

There are too many unfunded mandates from the feds for states to balance their budgets during tight times. If the states could drop those unfunded mandates, they could come closer to balancing their budgets.
