Spring update to the D&R

Well I have reduced my hobby count by 1 Sold my 1966 Dodge Dart I raced for 18 years off and on, I came to the conclusion that automobile racing wasn’t best choice of sports after the broken neck chapter in my life. So I went to the 2010 March Meet in Famoso California (largest Nostalgia drag Race in the world) to race it one more time and sell it, I Did just that. Now on to the expansion, in the next picture is my future yard, the expansion will connect the yard to the ground layout wit a max 4%grade.

From here it will exit right behind the shed across stump MT across the main line and tie in further down the main line.

I’ll post construction photos as it progresses. My freight shed expired, I just re-newed so maybe when Bob hits a switch the photos will appear?

John,
You’ve got spaces in the file names.

You must have really souped-up the little slant six that came in that H Class Dodge Dart? Time to move on to an old guy hobby.

Yes, that was my pint in this post ( poor communication skills) now I have more time and hobby dollars to expand the RR. Then when all the RR stuff triples in value, I start the downsizing sale for retirement. Maybe buy some chickens.

How time fly’s, 18 months the last update. As you know from the table saw post ,(finger is getting better, the 5 stitches come out on the 10th), I have been working the D&R. I have ordered lumber and it should be here next week, so I have worked on the yard and placed what Bents I have in place temporarily. here is a couple of pictures of the yard.

From the end of the yard. Cent do any switching without fouling the main, but this is the end of the line.

The track descends behind the shed to existing track in the yard 4 to 4 1/2% grade.

Hopefully It will be completed in less than 18 months.

Hopefully It will be completed in less than 18 months.

And with less injury. What you’ve done looks good

Looks good so far.

Always good to be workin on the RR.

Trestle pic looks very good. Nice progress.

Great work, John!

I have been doing more work on the trestle and must admit this is a challenge, the rail is going down and the ground is rising and it has me totally confused. i am probably going about this the wrong way as it just doesn’t look quite right to me however I have a plan to complete the illusion. I’ll post more pictures when complete. yea the picture sucks, I’ll get a better picture and replace it

Looking good so far John. In your situation the trestles just get shorter faster than if the track was level. Plot your rail grade with string and just measure the distance to the ground at the points where you want to put bents. Trying to figure it out with math will just make your head hurt

nice!

Fall report on Spring Update: I had hoped to finish the line from the yard by the end of summer, but didn’t quite make it,The last photo was the start of the trestle build, so the next is the other end which gave me fits. So last Saturday I decided to go back to work.

So I moved on to where the switching yard line meets the the main on the ground and laid some pipe.

I worked all day Saturday on the ladder system, got up Sunday morning and went back to work finishing the ladder to the trestle, then it was easier to finish the trestle and tie the 2 together. Sunday My friend and LSC member Mario McCarthey came by and we laid some track, without his help it wouldn’t have been completed Sunday.

WE had the first Train of cars to the Raised switching Yard cross the trestle at 16:30 10/02/11

And another

Well that it for this year, the rains have started today, and I don’t have any further expansion plans, I need to do some finish work on the trestle so I can fiddle there. The Switching yard is unusable assortment of switches and track that don’t work, that gives me somthing to work on then next year I start on the cover for the yard /train storage. thanks for the encouragement and Thanks to Mario!

Nice work. trestles look great. I bet it feels great to have trains running finally. Dont let the winter weather stop you though. Its a great time to run trains. Although some would disagree.

Is that an Aloe plant?

No, we do have Aloe plant but it’s not in the picture.

Hello everyone, I back to my RR after a 3 year break for other ventures which I neglected the RR and now am paying the price. We removed a pond in the back yard so some of the roadbed had to be removed, that has been replaced, I rebuilt 1 turnout and cleaned the rite of way for the first third of the Road, however I have some storm damage on Stump Summit ( elevation 30’) that I had to send a crew out to inspect, here they are hard at work.
