Large Scale Central

Spring is sprung

At least in Central California…

or, as attributed to Frederic Ogden Nash (paraphrased)…

Spring has sprung,

Da grass iz riz,

I wonders where da boidies iz?

Dey say da bord iz on da wing,

But dat’s absoid…

Da boid ain’t on the wing,

Da wing is on da boid!

Happy Spring!

TJ

What are those colorful things? Looks good!

Looks like winter was tough on the herd though.

Eric,

What are those colorful things? Looks good!

The yellow flowers are ice plant. This is the first year for these, at the sidewalk side of the yard I have purple/pink that so vibrant a color it almost hurts to look at them in full sunlight. I’ll snap a pick of that side tomorrow and post.

This red and pink flowers are a drought resistant grass that rows in a clump that gets to about 18 inches across. Can’t remember the name. Was hoping for three different colors based on the tags as I remember but got two red and one pink.

Looks like winter was tough on the herd though.

LOL! That’s Heckle and Jeckle, they are good listeners and never talk back. Cement from a local fountain / statue place in town. Less than $40 each as I remember it.

Best,

TJ

Very nice Tim, Love the colors. Great job. Please post more. need a color fix.

Yea, my railroad is still under several scale feet of that white stuff.

Yes … almost. Far enough along and still far enough out that I’m ready to get a largish tub of Aquascape Ecoblast and try to get rid of all the &^%$* algae in the lake.
No pictures necessary, are they? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-yell.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-yell.gif)

And mine is still under several 1:1 feet of it! Supposed to warm up this weekend. I’ll try and dig it out one more time and hopefully run a train.

Great looking gardens! Thanks for the spring colors.

I like those Ice Plants. I’ve had several varieties, but couldn’t get them to last more then a few years. I don’t think they liked the winters.

I two have planted a few variety’s of Ice plants. And like Ken they did not last but one season. they must be a warm weather plant.

They say we’re done with winter here, but seems a rather rash prediction to me.

Caution: Disagreeing with me can get you labeled as normal.

Don’t tease us who still have to wear heavy clothing (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)Even in your northern parts you guys aren’t cursed by Old Man Winter. Nice photos by the way.

Ice plants are succulents, part of the cactus family. They like a warm climate. There are some varieties that are more cold tolerant than others, but you have to search them out. Check with a nursery that specializes in rock or alpine gardens for a variety that will thrive in your neighborhood.

The ones I planted were bought locally, so I would assume they were a hardier variety. They did well for a couple of years then went poof! May have been a combination of weather, soil conditions and location that they didn’t like. Tried a few more in a different spot and the same thing happened. Course I’ve had other plants do that too. It’s just a matter of finding out what works around here and what doesn’t. Which can be an adventure it’s own right…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Nice to see some color. Like the rest of us in the Northeast im still burried. Even the last few days with warmer temps really didnt do any damage to the snow yet. This is a good 2ft plus base on layout. Thats Roosters faverite tricycle that i left out (handle bars showing) Plus there is a park bench under that snow as well lol…

I have a cactus plant growing here in Ottawa. It lives in a shallow oval bowl, with a base of earth, topped with course sand. It has been out there in full sun for over four years, but at this time every year it has at least two feet of snow over it. This summer we should see it flower, for the first time.

Yes…cactus does grow in the "Cold White North. I also know a couple in Montreal that have a proper Cactus garden, that survives Winter’s wintery blasts. We do get down below -30C…regularly.

The ice plants at the south end of the front yard are coming into bloom. In another month you won’t be able to see any green of the underlying plant at all.

Yea Spring!

Best,

TJ Lee

Some melting today, I can see the top of the big bridge over Majestic (center of photo). So there’s still about two good feet of snow there. Still cant see the high trestle, even though you can make out the shape of it.

Hey Bob I hope it all melts in time for your Ops session. We haven’t had any snow for over 6 weeks now.
