Spray paint colors?

I was planning to paint my RS-3 burgandy with gold-yellow trim. Rustoleum’s “Claret wine” will work for the burgandy but so far I haven’t found any yellow spray paint that comes close to what I want. I’m looking for something like Rio Grande Gold, or even “school bus” yellow.

Does anyone know where I could find spray paint in that shade of gold-yellow?

Are there any other options for painting rolling stock, when you need a particular color, that will hold up to outdoor use? It seems like most of the common spray paints don’t come close to the colors used on real railroad equipment.

Go to one of the farm supply stores and get John Deere yellow. Works for me.

When it comes to colors I’m going back to brush painting. I’m getting ready to paint some boxcars in the Carson & Colorado’s color. I was able to get a color chip from the rail museum in Laws (Bishop) and now I need to find a paint store that will custom mix the color.

Krylon has a nice yellow; I think it’s called Farm Equipment yellow.

If you do use Krylon, don’t use the Rustoleum as they do not like each other at all. Krylon does have a very nice burgundy, which I used on my parlor car.

HGTV just answered my question. I just need to take my paint chip to Lowes!

P.S. I’ve also found a good selection of Krylon colors at Lowes.

Bruce, did you use Krylon clear over the decals?

Ray,

Yes, but in the case of the parlor car, I used Krylon gloss over the decals. Typically, I use the satin or flat…

I wasn’t at all happy about the Rustoleum spray I used on my Business Car. It was very difficult to control the spray, and it shot out in a very tight focused pattern, requiring lots of passes to get an even coat - and that means lots of chances to get too much paint in one spot.

Wow I just used Krylon ruddy brown on a boxcar and I’m very pleased with the results. I usually use my airbrush to paint stuff as I have had awful results with spray cans. This stuff worked very well. Thanks for the advice guys.
