Take a B’mann Annie body plus a few offcuts and some styrene sheet, with a piece of pvc water pipe thrown in and you have my latest project. Southern Pacific narrow-gauge locomotives are very limited in availability, so with an abundance of LGB S.P. rolling stock (plus intention of building S.P. 401 in both pre- and post 1952 guise), I decided that I needed something that basically resembles one of the little 4-6-0’s from the desert. Whaleback is permanently built onto the B’mann tender frame. Before sheeting over, I fitted wiring internally for back-up light and power pickups. I have no intention of fitting sound to the tender body, so inability to access interior is not a problem, plus it aided assembly in getting a strong body. Loosely based on SPNG #18 (will have Walschaert valve gear), my version will retain the cab number ‘25’ for simplicity, as I am not building a copy of #18, but something that conveys the SP ‘look’. Body of the loco was chopped up into numerous pieces and rearranged to move the pressure dome and bell location forward of stock location on the Annie body. Water pipe was fitted and sheeted over. Smokebox door is a leftover from my experimentation with Heritage Express locomotives. Headlamp is from an Aristo Rogers.
Now this is gonna be something you don’t find on every layout.
Hi Tim,
Excellent project, with a great start. Number 18 is a great choice because of the valve gear. Are your staying at 1:22 or upping to 1:20 for scale?
I have had an Annie laying back in a corner of the workbench for several years with this very project in mind.
I will be saving your build thread and maybe it will spur me to get moving on mine.
Thanks for the posts
Rick
Rick, definately sticking with 1/22.5 scale. Tender now completed, awaiting paint shop. Tender is more an amalgamation of the different tenders fitted to the various 4-6-0 locomotives and not specifically #18. I altered the railings to make them more sturdy. Project will be delayed until an undec Annie is sourced to strip for the drive. Life is too short to spend the time fitting a trillion rivets, so tank will be unprototypically ‘welded’ construction.

Tim,
Very nice finish up. I see the amalgamation you speak of. It makes a very nice generic SPNG tender.
The railings look fine.

Tender now painted (still need to source decals). Body now completed (need to source B’mann Annie drive and fit, then paint). Locomotive is intended to be ‘inspired’ by SPNG #18 and is not a model of #18.

Love the tender. One of those is on my to-do list for the Connie.
