I’m going to be purposely vague here to avoid any chance of getting nailed for libel, so please forgive me.

Backstory: A few years ago an officer of a club I belong to got in a heated disagreement with a couple directors, and then suddenly resigned in a huff. A relative of this officer was not elected to a desired position, so resigned from another committee. Questions were raised with another unpopular ex-officer (who was friends with the other two) about where the proceeds of the sale some surplus club property eventually ended up, not accusations of theft, mind, just wanting to know where since they didn’t end up in the treasury within a reasonable period.

Fast forward: 4 someones have complained to the state AG about unspecified “irregularities” in the club’s finances. (guess who, plus one) and the officer who resigned has filed suit against ALL the other directors and officers of the club as individuals alleging financial misconduct and demands the club turn over copies of ALL meeting minutes, department head reports and financial statements for the last 4 years to the ex-officer’s lawyer within 30 days.

They have also indicated that they plan to lodge a complaint about conflict of interest since the people on the nominating committee (who got stuck with the job because nobody else wanted it) were themselves or related to people on the election ballot. (Forget that the club has 600 some odd paid members, maybe 100 semi-active members that at least help out during shows, only 55 that were classified “active” enough by the bylaws to be eligible to vote this year, and maybe 20 who actually bust their tails every year to hold the darned club together.)

I REALLY wanted to tell these people to “grow up”. I didn’t simply because it would only have made them MORE determined to hurt the club… and nothing else I could think of to say was even remotely printable.

Basically it pretty much is a few people with hurt feelings who are determined to stir up trouble for everyone else by claiming ethics violations to further their selfish person vendetta… And is there any wonder why so many people run as fast as they can the other way when the nominating committee people come within view. (and ALL the floor nominations at the election meeting this year refused to run.)

Like Groucho Marx. That is one of the reasons I refuse to join any club that would have me.

I’m going to add a few more bits of information, again in a generalized way. Just to explain the lengths these people are going to. In the interest of helping another club to avoid this kind of nonsense altogether.

The relative of the ex-director was active in fundraising for a special project. Some of those fundraisers were raffles organized BY THIS PERSON. One of the complaints made to the state AG was that the club didn’t have a license to run games of chance (that nobody else had a clue they even needed) to run those very raffles. (ie Punish everyone else for something YOU did…)

The “financial misconduct” that the lawsuit alleges is about THEY turned the money in to the treasurer, who kept track of how much was raised and “earmarked” for the project. But was never informed that the monies ALSO needed to be kept entirely separate from all other club funds. A statement was made by these people to the effect of “if a single penny of the money was spent”, or rather borrowed against (since the money IS all there, and has now been moved to special account) they “will bring the club down”…

To repeat, in a nutshell, ALL of this is because one person didn’t like the way two others spoke to her (and those two directors speak to EVERYBODY that way, but they also put in a LOT of hours to make sure all the dirty jobs no one else wants get done) Because the relative didn’t get elected. And the third person didn’t like being questioned why some money they were responsible for wasn’t turned in for about 3 months…

Seems like you have turmoil in every direction you turn.
I don’t mean to sound crass, as I know very little of the situations you have been involved in, but maybe the problem isn’t everyone else.

OK, fine. if y'all don't want to hear any more about it, I'll stop posting and leave y'all alone. I hope YOU never have the roof fall in and have someone say THAT to you..... I would like to know how the club problem COULD be my fault since the first I heard about it was when these people brought their lawyer to the meeting last night. . Or then there was the fellow at work who arranged for me to cover for him for "personal reasons" yesterday (to interview for a SECOND part-time job it seems), and my boss jumped to the conclusion that he quit without notice and said a lot of nasty things behind his back, then when he came in the TODAY to give them his new availability they fired him... and _I_ got stuck hearing the bitching from ALL sides ALL damn day.....I guess THAT problem was somehow MY fault too????????

I was gonna be nice and give you guys first shot at some LS items that I need to sell to pay some bills. since you felt the need to insult me, I guess I’ll just list 'em elsewhere.
