Large Scale Central

Special project?

Does this inspire you to build something?

Yes, it does.
I’ve gathered up some pics and info on those “hybrids”.
It would be fun to take one to club meets.
Then whip out the pic for proof of prototype.

Can’t promise it will be done soon, but just getting some ideas.

While interesting, I’m not convinced they lined up the passengers next to the boiler. “Steam Dummies” were generally used in street running “to avoid startling the horses”. Note where the crew is.

I think that most road locomotives built to this configuration were purpose-built for inspecting the railroad. As such, they did indeed carry passengers (i.e. the inspectors) in seats beside the boiler. Today some railroads have special cars with theater-type seating for the same purpose, but these cars are placed on the rear of the train - for obvious safety reasons.

Folks in the 1880s through the early 1900s probably did not consider riding beside the boiler as being that unsafe, after all, it was much better accomodation that a seat strapped to the pilot deck with buffalo robes to provide the warmth. And yes, I have seen photos of track inspection done that way (in one of my George Abdil books on railroading in the Northwest).

Best,
David Meashey

Jack Thompson did one like that:

Inspectors would only ride there on a cold winter day! That looks neat.

I knew I’d seen that loco. Thats right Jack Thompson did it. Wish I had half the skills he does.

You should see them in person - they look even BETTER than the pictures. He is VERY talented.

I really should not look at that kind of stuff
